Virgin Media are starting to install cable in my area. I live in a suburban area, with bungalows, semis and terrace houses. No apartment blocks.

The cable seems to be terminated outside each household. There is a small access flap on the pavement, similar to those used for water meters.
Question: How do Virgin Media connect to your house? Would this mean digging up my concrete drive?!

Note: I have a front lawn. So I expect they could lay the cable under there. But some digging up of the drive would be needed.

  • They would need to run it under your lawn or concrete yes if there is no termination point at your house already

I presume they would they "make good" any damage to the concrete drive?
Anyway, I'll wait until some other people in the area get cable installed. I can see how much digging needs to be done.

    Or not.. your choice... :)

yes its basically a duct outside your drive, ready for a cable to be pulled thru if you want to take up the service.

The installers are paid per install, so they want to be in and out as quickly as possible.

They don't have that many tools at their disposal so you are unlikely to see them digging up concrete/tarmac. and only lay the cable about 1 inch down in soil.

Think about the best route before they come and where you want it to enter the house as there will be a couple of unsightly boxes

I am in luck. There is a coaxial cable from an unused satellite dish, which came with the house. The cable goes through the front wall of my house and emerges right behind the living room TV.
Should be a piece of cake, once they get from the pavement onto my front lawn.
  • They won't likely use the cable.

But could certainly make use of the pre-drilled holes

Virgin Media seem to have installed the junction boxes up against the boundary walls of each property.
Do they go under the wall, or through the wall?

Is that under the surface of pavement? What if the wall has a concrete foundation?
Or do they run trunking up and through a cement joint in the wall?
  • Virgin will only do the bare minimum building work to connect you individually. This means burying the cable in your lawn, but not digging up any concrete. They don't use trunking on your wall any more than Sky or any other provider does. The bare wire will be fixed to the entry point on your wall with cable clips..
