House not heating up like it used to

Options
Hey folks

Any advice or help appreciated. My elderly parents got gas installed last July and it was great. Winter came and the thermostat easily hit 22/23 regularly. This year though the heating is struggling to even get to 20 for some reason. Anybody any ideas what it could be or what I could try? I suspect my dad might have turned it down but he said he turned it back up again for the cold snap that hit last week.

Thanks

Chris

Shall we assume that 'having gas installed' means that they have gas central heating?

Assuming they have a boiler of some sort (?) then maybe by turning up the temperature on the boiler would make the radiators hotter which would give more heat to the rooms.

    Maybe? :)

    Check the room thermostat.
Check the temperature dial on the front of the boiler.
Check the TRVs on the individual radiators.
Check if any radiators need bleeding.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    In addition to the above.

Are the bottoms of the radiators cool even after the CH has been on for a long while?

Why are your elderly parents changing the thermostat depending on outside temperatures?

Set it at a comfortable temperature and forget about it. It's job is to maintain that temperature no matter what the outside temperatures are.

If your heating system is not capable of reaching the desired room temperature due to abnormally cold external temperatures, turning up a thermostat will not change that at all.

So not installed last July. Installed Julyy 2016?

What does 'got gas installed' mean? New gas pipe supply? New gas boiler?

If they had a new boiler installed:
    * how lng was the warranty by either the manufacturer and/or installer?
    * has it been serviced in line with the manufacturer's warranty requirements (often annually)?

Assuming you've checked everthing in posts 4 & 5 above, call the installer out to check the boiler and hopefully any fault will be under warranty.

ps - is it a combi boiiler?

I had a problem a few days ago - my bedroom thermostat was set at 23 degrees, and had been for some time, but the temperature in there was 19.

I experimented by turning down the temperature in the two rooms I used least and that worked.

I have now set my main room and bedroom at 23 degrees and the other two at 20, and it has maintained those temperatures.

I can only put the problem down to the very cold weather outside.
