Totally with OP, which won't surprise anybody. You just assume that payment date remains static, and you think that Banks would actually let you know of a major change like that by separate letter, or put it big and bold on the statement, so that it is hard to miss. Also, the penalty fee is meant to penalise bad payers, missing a badly publicised date change hardly ranks as bad and worth a fine. Totally agree that losing your account cannot be worth the £6 they have taken, especially as your call probably cost a lot more than that to deal with, obviouly not The Smartest Bank Alive......;)

Once upon various times, I thought so too. However it's happened to me on three occasions now (Different cards, btw, but all underwritten by MBNA) and judging from the complaints to this forum, hundreds of customers are caught out.

Let's face it, for every MSE that complains to MBNA and gets a refund, there will be many more who simply pay up. So whether intentional or not, it's a nice little earner.

Notice of the change will be embedded somewhere in the leaflet, which accompanied the previous monthly statement.

Proof - if further proof were needed - that it pays to read the small print ;)

Completely agree with the main poster. I live away from home and often rely on internet banking to pay my bills ... I have a standing order set up to pay a regular amount off my bills. I know it technically would be my fault if I missed a payment but I think its awful customer service to not withdraw the charge in this instance...
