Peed off with Mbna !!

Got my statement today and it's got a £12 late payment fee and £1 odd interest charge ! Surprised I try to work out what's gone on - worked it out, they've changed the payment due date, it was always 8th following month end, now it's the end of the month. Sure enough it was on the September statement but I didn't spot it. But then I wasn't looking for a change.

So I ring up Mbna :
Me : Why have you changed the payment due date ?
CS : It's because our terms & conditions have changed - do you want us to change it back ?
Me : So why change it just to change it back now I've called up ?
CS : It's because our terms & conditions have changed - do you want us to change it back ?
Me : No, I'd like you to cancel the penalty charge and interest
CS : No we can't do that, it's a standard fee
Me : I know you can so can you transfer me to someone who can
CS : No we can't
Me : Can you transfer me to complaints please
CS : No you have to write to them, do you want the address ?
Me : No, this is their number (01244 672684 ) from saynoto0870, can you transfer me please ?
CS : No, we've been told you have to write. I can transfer you to a manager.
Me : Ok then ................. 7 minutes wait .............................
CS : We can refund half the fee, £6
Me : Can I speak to the manager I was holding for ?
CS : That's what she said
Me : Can I please speak to the manager I was holding for ?......... 4 minutes
CSM : Hello, we can refund £6 and the interest only as it was your mistake, our terms and conditions changed and it's your responsibility to monitor your account
Me : That's why I'm phoning you - so you're happy to lose a customer with a £11K limit for the sake of £6 ?
CSM : Yes

Ok, my fault, I didn't notice they changed the payment due date ( which they didn't exactly highlight !) And they've managed to earn themselves £6. Whoopie ! It was a scond card ( ex Conran ) which didn't get used much BUT now it'll be cancelled and I'll actually get my a**e in gear getting that new cashback card I've been meaning to get. Yes it was my fault - but I think it was sharp practice at best - and isn't a long-term profitable decision for Mbna. Still they couldn't care less whether they lose a customer or not.

I'm kinda surprised you don't check the payment due date.

    It's an enjoyable rant though.
  • They changed the date, as they are allowed too
They sent a statement showing date
    You didnt check date
    You paid late
    You incurred late fee
Were exactly is the big injustice?

I think it is a big injustice.

We set our payment dates for a reason, usually for our wages to be paid. I get at least 10 lot of statements each month from banks, credit cards, bills etc, I don't check them all especially if I have been paying on the same day for years.

I also can't stand companies that charge you for paying late, technically she was doing what she has been doing since she got the card and see no reason why its her fault her payment was late.

I don't think it is your fault, I think its a sneaky way for companies to make that extra bit of money whilst they are having to refund so much at the moment.

Why did they changed their payment date anyway?

I love how us britains have worked so hard to reclaim unlawful charges back over the last year or so, (exactly what Money Savings Expert is all about) and you are now justifying that a £12 charge is fair for making a payment a few days late?

Late payments of these kind are a big injustice, hence why we've all been spending thousands on postage stamps and paper to these companies to get our money back!

A number of times I said it was my fault - you obviously don't read.

Why exactly change the payment due date ... if the first thing they say is ''We'll change it back '' - Could it be to earn ??
Why do their CS say you can only write to ''Complaints'' when a phone number is available so this is manifestly untrue ?
Why say the late payment fee cannot be reversed, then offer to refund half of it ?

I bend over backwards to be fair and accept responsibility when I'm at fault ( as I was here ) but the bank and credit card supporters here open their mouths before they actually read a post ! This site is about consumers, and I as a consumer am peed off that Mbna moved the goalposts, I didn't notice and it cost me. So sue me !!

Probably because they know they were wrong and probably messed up a lot of people paying and so probably are getting loads of complaints from people getting late payment charges.

Because 'their terms & conditions changed' - whatever that means. It's a global get-out. I've no idea why the payment date changed.

Doubtless it was changed for good reason as opposed to "Let's change the payment due date and collect all those £12's."

One of MBNA's favourite tricks is to bring the payment due date forward a few days. Notice of this change will be embedded somewhere in the small-print leaflet which accompanied your last statement.

Well I rang Mbna again ( free minutes on the mobile ) and at least this CS person had the balls to be honest. Mbna have reduced their interest free period, consequently brought forward their 'payment due' date ... to increase their profitability.

Fine - I just can't stand corporate BS.
