Water hammer after plumber fitted new washer which now drips again

In September a plumber from Homeserve replaced the washer on my dripping kitchen cold water mixer tap. After that every time I turned that tap on I had a banging noise which I never had before. The tap is fed off the incoming main water pipe. Don't know if that makes any difference as my other cold water taps are fed brom the tank in the loft.
The noise has stopped in the last few days and today the tap is dripping again. I have called out the plumber again to fix it.
I assume that the new washer shouldn't have failed in such a short period of time but I know nothing about plumbing. Is the plumber likely to give me a run around. The taps are over 30 years old and so were the old washers so why hasn't the repair lasted or am I expecting too much.

Yes!
You need a new set of taps.0 -
Why do I need new taps. All I want is a replacement washer repair to last more than 3 months. If that's the life of things it is appalling as I can afford to pay every 3 months.0

It's probably debris in the seat, and if the taps are that old they probably need re-seating too.
Water hammer is probably because the 'old' pressure was lower because the stockcock was turned down. Try adjusting that until the hammer stops, or as for an arrestor to be fitted.

Thanks for the advice. For some reason the tap has stopped dripping, why I don't know. Yesterday it was dripping at the rate of 200ml per hour. Today none. Wierd.
As I have cancelled the plumber I hope it stays that way or starts to play up before the policy expires.0 -

Although, obviously, you want a replacement washer to last a decent amount of time, carrying out the replacement is generally a straightforward DiY job.0 -

In which case I would say debris was the culprit, and has now been flushed out.
Fingers crossed anyway
