One of my first holidays abroad was to Laigueglia on the Italian riviera, which is next to Alassio, both would be nice places for a day out (we went on a day trip from there to Monaco so certainly possible to go the other way).

Thats great i will not have transport so would train be the best option?

Easiest option would be the train to Ventimiglia - not far over the border but used to be very worthwhile on a friday to visit the weekly market on the seafront. It'd be worth checking before you go that this still happens

I'd recommend a visit to Grasse, We took a train from Cannes. We've stayed in Mandelieu, which is a bus journey from Cannes, so you are not far from the hustle of the busy town, but had the peace and quiet in the evenings. Also the beach wasn't terrible busy :)

Definitely agree, out of all the places I visited in this region (Nice, Antibes, Villefranche, Beaulieu) Cannes was the only disappointing place. Very little culture, just high end shops, hotels and a big conference centre.
