  • We camped in Menton for two weeks and it was a great place to explore the area from.
If you will have a car go inland to explore the villages away from the coast.

Nice is a lovely spot. How long are you going to that area for?

That might decide a destination for you. Somewhere on the train line between Cannes and Ventimiglia (across the border in Italy) might be a good choice if you do not want to stay in the city.

But do not dismiss Nice. It is buzzing, good transport links and plenty of things to do and see, and every day you can visit a different place on the wonderful train line from Cannes to Menton/Ventimiglia. if that's what you want of course!

Thank you! !!! I was planning on a week. I won't have a car, i was worried that nice may be a little noisy on the evening as most places to stay are in busy spots.

Look for apartments in the residential areas. We stayed here earlier this year and it was very quiet. I'd recommend the apartment, but if you're after a hotel there are several nearby as well. My nephew stayed in the old town, and that was noisy - with street entertainment outside their apartment until 1am!

About 30mins by train IIRC. Depending on the time of year Cannes is great but unless you've deep pockets avoid mid-end May (Film Festival week).

The train runs along the coast from Monaco to Frejus before heading inland so depending on what you want from your holiday consider (from east-west) Antibes, Cannes, Cannes Mandelieu, Agay, St Raphael/Frejus.

I'd second that train journey. It's very scenic, running right along the coast. I'd suggest a trip to Monaco. Get there in the morning to see the Changing of the Guard (absolutely nothing like Buckingham Palace) and then have a wander.
Just after a bit of help and reassurance!!

Ever heard of the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say'

It may have been a bit clumsily expressed but why have you settled on Nice if you're concerned about it being busy/noisy?

I worked near Nice for nearly a year and a half, staying in Villefranche-sur-Mer, about 10 minutes east by train. That's very quaint, at least the old town at sea level is, and is only 20 minutes from Monaco by train. There's plenty of buses along the coast too, although not so much after 10pm.

Knowing the area well, we've chosen to stay in Beaulieu-sur-Mer at Easter, which is only another couple of miles east of VF. We love that area because of the walk around Cap Ferrat. It was a toss up between Beaulieu or Villefranche, as they're in easy walking distance of each other, but the cheap Ibis Styles at Beaulieu swung it.

I'd say you won't go wrong in Cannes, Nice, Villefranche, Beaulieu, Monaco or Menton. It just depends what's important to you. I prefer the two towns immediately east of Nice as they're smaller, quieter and central to everything.

One of my first holidays abroad was to Laigueglia on the Italian riviera, which is next to Alassio, both would be nice places for a day out (we went on a day trip from there to Monaco so certainly possible to go the other way).
