If he enjoyed The Hunger Games worth reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorien_Legacies
There are 7 books in the series and follow the same sort of genre as The Hunger Games but are a bit more sci-fi-y.
There is a film made from the first book, but the book was a lot better.
Mortal Instruments (already mentioned) and Divergent (also already mentioned) would have been the other 2 I would recommend. Both pretty similar to THG.0 -
I've bought this set for my son aged nearly 10 and a good reader. The Alex Rider series has excellent reviews and 10 books for £12 is very good value:

What about the "Cherub" series by Robert Muchamore - my son loved them, although he did say they got very predictable the more he read.0

The Mortal Engines series by Phillip Reeve is a great series of books that my son loved at that age. I also loved them as well (I am a bit older...). Very similar to Phillip Pullman but less "deep" and more straightforward and "action" oriented.
There is a film coming out at the end of 2018 based on the books as well, produced by Peter Jackson.0 -
When you have selected a book or series, it may well be worth checking if it uses American spelling (colour/color etc) and also that the grammar used is good. This obviously isn't an issue for adults but for a youngster could be important if they go on to read a really long series, because at that age they are like sponges & you wouldn't want them soaking up that stuff.0

You have almost described my 19 yo grandson. He is Dyslexic in that he reads very well, but cannot get words onto paper: says that the words "all swim about in my head". He has a fantastic memory and is on the last year of an Electrical Engineering course, his maths is fine and he is intelligent. He found that using a computer keyboard when he was younger, helped him to spell. Nowadays his fingers fly over the keys, he still makes mistakes but is improving all the time. He uses e-books a lot, especially Kindle.
He downloaded "Kindle for PC" onto his computer to complement other e-books and is now able to find and read his own books, by reading the short extracts from books on Kindle, then downloading the ones he wants to read. If your son has a smartphone or tablet, he could put Kindle onto any of those and Kindle books will download wirelessly. Or even buy a Kindle, although they are expensive and a tablet or phone can do the same job. I have a Hudl2 which I use to download and read Kindle books, so does my grandson.
Amazon Gift Cards can also be bought, to purchase Kindle books. My grandson says that he likes to look for his own books.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

For non fiction the Horrible History series of books is quite good. They are amusing and easy to read and have illustrations so not too much of a challenge for a young reader. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
