Books for a 12 year old boy

Hi,

I'm looking for a book for my 12 year old son. He's read all the Hunger Games books and I just wondered what would be a good choice for him to read next. His reading is average for his age and his spelling is poor. Its been suggested that reading more might help.

Not sure whether fact or fiction would be better. He has a amazing general knowledge - way above what I would expect for his age. He seems to spend a lot of time researching things on the internet. For example, he told me his exact plan for his funeral the other day and the told me in detail what happens when you are cremated

Thanks.

  • Have a look on The Book People site. They put suggested ages on the books.
They also have a good selection of non-fiction books that might interest him.
Ask at your local Library (if you are near one). The Librarians are always very helpful

Books by Rick Riordan? http://rickriordan.com/# Various series he's written. The stories cover mythology. A couple have been made into films. My son read the at the younger age of 9, but was still reading and enjoying them when he was 12 and beyond.

    Insurgent, divergent triology?

Both my son and Nephew enjoyed the books by Simon Mayo, aged around 12

How about the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz?
  • Boys often enjoy non-fiction more than fiction, so consider books to do with his interests. My son has read books about travelling around Britain and loved them (no idea why he chose them in the first place though!). He also prefers biographies to fiction.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed the Maze Runner series myself. I'm not 12 but I reckon I would have liked it at that age too.

Wish my 12-year-old was interested in reading.

How about the “make your own adventure” books, eg the Fighting Fantasy series?

    Harry Potter?
    His Dark Materials?
    Discworld?
  • My eldest son was a poor speller but a great general knowledger too. He preferred non fiction and struggled with stories. How about trying a few options in the library to see which he prefers before spending out of books in a series?

I'd second these books. Mine loved them as teens.
