  • I use a product called a sea pear which is basically a natural sponge with a string attached which is used the same way as a normal tampon and it is washable and reusable for 6 months.

No horrible scary hard plastic the are comfy and work brilliantly

Plus for £7.99 you get 2 sponges so you are saving stacks of money compared to tampons.
  • Sorry that was meant to be Sea Pearl!!

Hey that sounds good :o have you used them yourself? I'm tempted to try these if somebody has had a good experience with them.

How much is postage off that site too?

  • Hey keelykat have a look here, it's a list of physical shops that stock sea pearls all around the UK.

To save you looking through the whole list, click "Edit", "Find" (Internet Explorer) or "Edit", "Find in this page..." (Firefox) and search for a few towns near you (you have to do it one at a time) or your county.

Bigpaws, it's fast becoming a passion of mine as well.

Well, I'm delighted to have found a kindred spirit - weird as that may sound :D
I've always hated wearing them but tampons seem to dry me out and the feeling when you pull them out scares me!

gag! I so know what you mean. They surely were designed by the male of the species. LOL

It seriously makes me wonder, thinking about a friend of mine who has a prolapsed uterus whether it's at all possible that years of pulling tampons out of her has 'loosened' things a little
As I have mentioned in above threads, I'd love to get the "alternatives" at least mentioned by schools, doctors, etc. Most girls of that age would probably run a mile at the thought of reusables but at least they'd know for the future!

I am totally with you on that one. As a mum of a 6 year old, this is a subject that is close to my heart. Dh and I are very open about these things, so menstruation is just an 'everyday' occurance like anything else.

So far so good and dd is actually looking forward (too cute) to starting hers. But how on earth she would cope with washables at SCHOOL I have no idea. It was totally shrouded in secrecy and humiliation when I was young and I scurried off to the toilets with disposables stuffed up my sleeve desperate for people not to notice.

I\m amazed at the amount of my friends who are going to continue this with their daughters though; they keep everything secret and don't know how to talk about it *at all* - they're delighted that the Tampax lady is around to brainwash their kids...............it really saddens me that history will repeat itself and we'll breed another generation of women and men who keep things hidden away (and thus the disposable market flourishes).

    Steps off soapbox

Another mooncup user here. It took me a couple of months to work out the exact angle to insert it properly but it was totally worth the effort. I would not be without my mooncup now.
  • Well I know I wouldn't have used them at school. Kids can be so judgemental, and the prospect of periods, especially for boys, is so "hilarious" that adding the reusable aspect would most likely make it worse. It's just the fact I didn't even know they existed before somebody helpfully informed me. It would be nice to have it mentioned is all so that young ladies can do their own research and make their own choice when it comes to it.

Lol - I don't think I knew what periods were when I was 6! My mum called her tampons "Mummy's nappies" but by the time I did start I was quite excited about it because all my friends had started theirs years before!
