Sneaky switchover dates

Options
Just realised that the timing of my switchover means BT are going to charge me an extra full months full price fibre (£47.49!) for 1 day's use

I've arranged a switchover to a NowTV deal 2 weeks ago on the 25th,
My current BT fibre deal ended on the 9th,
The switchover is on the 11th
...so todays use (10th) is going to cost me the full month

is there anything I could do now to get some of the costs back?

I'm guessing not... in which case what should I have done differently? made the switch earlier and accept a smaller early exit charge? or could I have rang up as soon as I made the switch to get BT to cancel early (and go without internet for the 1 day?)

You normally pay up to the date you switch, irrespective of your monthly due date.

All you can do is await your final bill and dispute it if they charge you for the full month

Is that what normally happens? Think I read somewhere that you normally pay until the end of the month.

I’ve got my bill through online and sounds like they are going to charge me for it, might give them a call
  • That will not be your "Final Bill". You should receive that within a month of the switchover and you should find a full credit for the days not used. That will be paid back to you to your DD bank or by cheque.

Why bother starting a thread when you get an answer then don't want to trust the advice?

Giving them a call in the first place would have saved both your time starting a thread and those daft enough to post helpful replies to you

When you get through to them, and the answer is the one you want then ask for it to be confirmed back to you in writing

If its not the answer you want ring back and talk to someone else!

They keep your account open until you leave in case you use something chargeable eg a non-inclusive call. Your refund should be pro rata.

I don't know about phone and internet, but Sky tv now gives you a final bill before your cut off date ,but once cancellation is made you cannot hire any films , so the calculation can be done before you leave.
  • Thanks all for your responses :)

@Quentin relax, was just querying :rotfl:

Although you now should be reassured that you get a refund from BT for the days you paid them for after the changeover , I'm curious how it's BT that are 'sneaky' with the changeover date considering its was yourself and Now TV that picked the date not BT

I've had nothing to do with the date, the date was picked between now TV and BT. I've also not had any communications from BT regarding a refund so the timing of everything was in fact a bit "convenient" for them wouldn't you say?

All I've had was a email saying that I was going to be billed for the 10th Dec until the 9th Jan. (...and a seperate email informing me of the switchover date on the 11th)

Strange when I switched from Plusnet to BT, I chose the date.

So if you had no involvement in picking the changeover date, then it was a date picked by Now TV, on their own, BT had no involvement in the date picked , if the date Now TV picks happens to be just after you have paid a month in advance to BT, then you do get refunded by BT the full days of that month that you are Now TV customer and not a BT customer..as I said BT don't get the chance to be 'sneaky', should the date slip ( because Openreach do the exchange work after the target date, then the number of days refunded is reduced accordingly)
