You wont get apple to remove the activation lock unless you can provide proof of purchase.

Its as simple as that :(

That is what apple told me and when we cleared my dad's house although he kept his paperwork in good order there certainly wasn't a proof of purchase for his i pad

  • my other question is how did the authentication lock activate, the message that came up said the owner of the i pad used find my phone - strange seeing as my dad never had an i phone and died over 5 years ago:(

That might have been some sort of hack attempt, purely coincidental.

Also, I had understood that every Apple device (certainly the ones sold via Apple shops) can be tracked right back to the purchaser via the serial number.
  • when i spoke to apple support she asked for serial number and i also confirmed my dad's email address but she went away to speak to supervisor and then came back and said nothing they can do without proof of purchase

^^ No I'm really sorry but unless you have that proof of purchase you are not using that device.

Honestly - there is no way :(
  • Thanks for everyone's help anyway

  • A hand-written receipt is a proof of purchase, is it not...?

In this context, I very much doubt it.
