Sorry not sure what you mean by "open ended retail funds"?

    What platform do you use?

    How would you check them??

I'm still a bit confused when it comes to OCF... let me ask it a different way... if last years performance of Fund A was 20% and OCF 0% (I know this doesn't exist but just for this question) I would have seen growth of 20% correct?

So the difference between an passive vs active fund is that an active fund is managed and they regularly keep an eye on stocks and maybe buy/sell etc whereas a passive fund they just buy it and forget?

As for the low risk part of my portfolio, please could some people suggest some lower risk funds I could take a look at?

    Cheers all
using your Legg Mason Japan as an example on Trustnet - in the info box it tells you its an OEIC (open ended) so can issue more units for the money coming in where an IT like Witan has a set amount of shares to trade(basic answer somebody will teach you better)
with charges OCF is a better guide then AMC a quick look online and i found from the Telegraph "funds that cost four times the advertised rate" which might help with hidden charges.
As for a safe fund there is no answer as everybody has a different idea but at the most basic it would be an All world tracker/etf or a multi asset fund but even that may not be right for you(or others:))
As others have said with charges there is also the platform to look at
  • Is it a good idea for a balanced portfolio to include some index and some active funds?

It is more important that it contains a wide range of underlying investments. That is what you should aim for. Whether you use active or passive funds is very much a secondary concern. Some people have 100% passive, my portfolio is 100% active. Some people have both.

So spread of different types of companies and countries?

maybe start by having a read of Tim Hale - smarter investing, plus there are some little books such as DIY Pensions: A Simple Guide to Pensions, SIPPs & Retirement Planning by John Edwards which I got for free on kindle unlimited.
Until you have some background knowledge it would be unwise to leap in.
