We need a new tv and are thinking of going Freeview and getting rid of our Virgin TV. We would like to have a Freeview set with the record option. Anyone recommend how we go about choosing the best option? Would like to be able to watch extra sport as well, on ESPN. Not sure best way to do this? Any advice? Anyone using a Humax box?

Get a Freeview Play or Youview Humax box. If the box you get does not have a ESPN app then you will have to stream it another way such as via a Chromecast.

You might be thinking of getting a Freeview TV that can record, by plugging a USB stick or hard drive into it - don't. It will be very limited compared to the facilities you're used to on the Virgin box (you'll likely be stuck watching what you're recording just as one example), so as Wongataa says, a Freeview Play or Youview box will give you good recording facilities, plus easy to use catch up services (iPlayer etc). ESPN - pass.

ESPN in on BT TV and BT Sport as BT Sport / ESPN a subscription channel, requires BT Infinity and a Youview box. Also on Plusnet not sure about EE BB. Not aware of any UK ESPN app, but can be viewed via BT Sport from BT on a Chromecast.

Probably the cheapest way is to switch to plus net and take the plusnet tv on you view plus box. A fiver a month gets you the entertainment pack with bt sport lite (bt sport 1) and another fiver a month gets you the BT Sport pack with BT Sport 1, 2 and 3 and Bt Sport / ESPN as well as box nations. If you want HD that's another fiver a month.

Pretty easy just choose a tv with inbuilt Freeview, most are but make sure it has its own record facility.
Can do it on an old 5 year old Panny two ways both with external USB ports. Normally i use a 64gb fast memory card can watch one whilst recording another but wont do it if i switch to Freesat ie inbuilt Dual Tuner.

Not that theres anything to watch yet alone record mine gets no use.

ESPN is available on Freeview, seen it last week along with Sky Sports and other stuff, however will need to pay to see it.
Just checked its on Top Up TV.

Can also get anything on Amazons Firestick or box.

Seen it listed in the last two weeks clumped in with a couple of other sports channels ie Boxnation. Not there tonight and neither on Freesat, apps gone.
Its still available on Prime video install app, pay then view.

Edit ESPN app is still on Amazon Prime Video but now taken off Fire TV very recently. However shows will work with Android devices.
Also not showing in Firebox installed apps.
