Welsh cake baking tray

Does anyone know where I can buy a traditional baking tray for making Welsh cakes. I've got one myself which is a flat, round "tray" with a handle which goes on the gas hob. It was my gran's so I didn't buy it myself. Am looking to do a Welsh recipe hamper for my Dad for Xmas so want to get him 1.
Also if anyone has any family recipes for welsh cakes/ bara brith that they don't mind passing on, that would be great.
I remember my great Aunt used to make plain welsh cakes and cut them in half and spread with jam whilst they were still warm. Lush.

Don't know where you are in South Wales - maybe Kitchens in Cardiff. I know that you can buy flat rectanular griddles from most good kitchen shops

Sorry, that may not be much help - I use my nans inch thick cast iron griddle. theres something special about it!

We use a 90 year old iron griddle (or bake-stone as my great aunt called it). I am sure you could buy one from a blacksmith (if you can find one that is)maybe St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life sell them or why not just order one from the welshgriddles website - £25 seems quite a good price to me.

Ours is about 70 years old. Hand made by my grandfather when he worked at the steelworks.

what you are looking for is known as a griddle or a bakestone. you often find them in the larger welsh gift shops

  • Thanks for all your replies guys and links to where I can buy a bakestone.
I live in Swansea so will keep my eyes peeled in the gift shops and a trip to MacArthur Glen sounds on the cards as well.

I use a heavy cast iron skillet as a temporary bakestone - I shall inherit the family's treasured heirloom in the (very) distant future.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

My Mum used a bakestone that was actually set into her ancient GEC cooker, until the cooker conked out, then she bought a Raclette (I think that's what they're called) a flat volcanic rock set on an electrically heated base that is usually used for cooking small bits of meat etc at the table (it's hard to describe, but it was a kind of flat, slow-cooker) - it worked a treat, and her welsh cakes were to die for.
