he has impetigo, seems to be spreading over his face - bleugh...was kind of hoping he had caught it off someone because he sounds like a right dirty one now!

Both of mine had impetigo, a little way apart. I think they pick stuff up when we go to big play barns.
DS had a nasty weeping rash spreading into his ear on the Saturday morning which appeared overnight. I phoned NHS direct as you can't easily access an emergency GP in my area. I had just worked a night and was hanging and they took >4v hours to call back. When someone called back again I explained the whole thing again and said it looked like impetigo etc etc and that DS kept fiddling with his ear. I knew he needed antibiotics and am well aware of the risk of deafness if wet rashes spread too far into the ear canal.
The chap on the phone got all patronising with my insistance that he needed to see a doctor (you have to be referred by NHS direct or go to A&E) and said "with all due respect Mrs ... I am a trained nurse and it doesn't sound that serious."
To which I replied "with all due respect Mr ... I am also a trained nurse and I can see my child and know he needs to see a doctor now if you won't refer me I WILL take him to A&E because it will be cheaper for the trust to treat his ear than to cover my night shift with an agency nurse and pay in charge rates!"
So he offered to get someone to call me back ASAP and I said don't bother. I took him down to the GP clinic who said that there had been masses of complaints about my GP surgery not having any back up and put us straight through.
The GP took one look and said "Why have you left it this long to seek medical help this child should have seen a Dr yesterday and started AB's then" (He couldn't believe a. how quickly it had spread and b. the run around I had had!

Oh and MiL treated us like we had the plague then too!

It didn't seem to bother either one of them too much though- less bother than a cold sore! Hope he gets better soon.

  • I'm so jealous, I haven't seen a pork hock for years.
Only last week I asked the butcher in Morrisons if they ever had them and he said they mostly get cured nowadays and sold as gammon shanks.

    Bella

We're lucky because our largest Morrisons always has them. The little one in town doesn't tho.

I love them cooked slowly too and then served with roasties and onion sauce. Yum. Our Morrisons sells some marinated ones too in chinese style, next to the flavoured fresh chops.

I've bought poppy seeds in tescos, although they may not be where you'd think they'd be. They're NOT in the fruit and veg section where you can find a lot of seeds for eating or the healthy foods section.. they're in the baking foods department! Made by whitworths, cost around 39p a packet.

I found them! Got myself a few packets, too. :D

I've now discovered, through my treasure style hunt in Tesco, that they have FOUR different places where you can find sesame seeds, but one little, right at the top, hidden practically out of sight, squeezed in among the gelatine, place for the poppy seeds. Oh well, I may be the only one that ever finds them again. They'll be all mine.

I didn't realise that about the risk of deafness, my ds has it a little on his chin but the worst place is in the nostril crevice. Looks loads better today though.

The doctor I saw was the locum yesterday (lovely chap) but he leant back away from ds when I explained I thought he had impetigo!

Doesn't seem to bother him at all, he's running round the house now like a mad one.

I am thinking about what to have for dinner tonight, I know that I should have done this last night. Dp didn't have his dinner last night because he went out to play pool so I think I will serve up the sausage casserole again but with a variation. I didn't have to put rice in it it the end yesterday as it thickened up nicely so I will probably cook some rice to go along side it today instead of potatoes.

Everytime I read these post about finding poppy seeds it makes me feel ill. I went through a "healthy" phase but ended up over indulging on all types of seeds and being up all night sick!

ps - don't know why I am having a problem trying to quote this morning, have ended up cutting and pasting!

My daughter had Impetigo when she was about 4 on her legs - where she gets bad eczema.
After it had healed and was no longer infectious she still had little red areas(not weeping and not open) - all the impetigo had gone as she had 2 weeks of antibiotics I let her play out and one of our neighbours sore the scars and made a right fuss. She was no longer infectious and was fed up at not playing for so long. With her eczema now when she has swimming she gets really embarrased as some people act like she has the lurgy.

Yes it's not the impetigo that causes it. It's wet nasty rashes. Anything that can leave scar tissue. The trouble with ear rashes is that they don't stop fiddling with their ears!

Ds is 5 and has his fingers in his ears or up his nose regardless of any rashes. He is desperate to get back to school before they break up on Friday.

Back to the food storage challenge now - does anyone have a tried and tested alternative to a bog standard chicken casserole that can be done in the slow cooker? Dp has been moaning about all the tins of tomatoes, tomato soup and baked beans that are in the cupboard so I would like to use some of these if possible. I have all the other storecupboard basics pretty much also, spices, herbs etc. I am just lacking inspiration so any help would be gratefully accepted. This will be tomorrow nights dinner.

    Many thanks

People are cruel aren't they?! I imagine she feels self-concious as it is without other people adding to it.

yes.. although it will require some pre-preparation.. get a jar of pesto, and marinade some cubed chicken in the pesto (or use oil and herbs) overnight. in the morning, fry off the chicken, just to seal it, add some onion, just to saute, then put into the slow cooker. Then make it like you would make a bolognaise sauce: plum tomatoes, tomato puree, some more herbs, the chicken, the onion, maybe some red or green pepper pieces, any other veg you might like, seasoning of course, maybe some black olives.. you could drain and wash a tin of baked beans and chuck those in too for extra healthy protein. Serve with pasta. What happens is the tomato sauce part tastes like a standard bolognaise sauce, but when you bite into the chicken, you get this lovely burst of herby flavour that then mingles with the tomato sauce in the mouth. :)

right. back to sorting out the christmas decorations..
