Am I getting free gas?

In a word no, your not getting free gas, there are very few signed contracts now adays with utility companies, verbal agreements over the phone generally, and can you prove that you didn't sign up with BG verbally over the phone, just phone BG and tell them whats happened, it will be classed as an ET, and get on with your life, its too short trying to get one over on BG."Wisdom doesn't automatically come with old age. Nothing does, except wrinkles. It's true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place." — Abigail Van Buren0

Sorry guys - it's Scottish Power (not Scottish Gas) that I've signed with. Therefore they are not the same company...The point is that I've told Scottish Power that British Gas are not supposed to be supplying me and they've investigated - I've tried therefore to tell British Gas and they've investigated and found that it was not an ET...I'll wait and see what happens but I suspect that they won't bill me for some time at which point I'll let you know what happens...
Thanks again for all your help and I am keen to let this one play itself out as it all seems very very wrong to me...Tesco is my second home:j0 -
I moved into a new build about 8 years ago, stayed there for 3 years and never got a gas bill, neither did my neighbours ... don't know what was going onGood manners cost nothing -Bad manners cost friends !Murphys No More Pies member #2130

How do you define 'signed with'?
Is it not possible that you contacted Scottish Gas(aka BG) by mistake on -line or by phone? - easily done.
I can't see how BG(SG) could have possibly got involved unless you had contacted them or a rogue salesman 'signed you up'.
Anyway your contention that BG cannot make you pay as they haven't got a signed contract, IMO is not a valid argument. Have you signed a contract with SP or anyone? Even if you had a signed contract how do you end that contract?
If they are supplying you - and you are using their supplies - you are liable to pay them for those supplies.0 -

Sharkmark, as British Gas have already looked into the ET and advised that they hold a valid contract, I am not sure how much more this issue will "play itself out". If Scottish Power are your selected supplier, you could sign back up with them.....the transfer will take the usual 6-8 weeks, British Gas will send you a final bill for your period with them, and you will be back with the supplier you intended to be with in the first place (SP). Waiting for British Gas to bill you is surely prolonging the pain, as you will remain with a supplier you didnt want to be with in the first place, and who are likely more expensive than Scottish Power.0 -
Sharkmark - if you get nowhere, go to Energywatch. Suppliers in the case of verbal sign ups only hold a record on the system and no actual proof that you even called them. Remember those recorded tapes are "for training purposes only" so they can't really prove it unless they have your signature on an agreement or some personally data that they could not have gained without you e.g. bank details.
They will contest it until the cows com home because they want your cash. Energywatch are needed.
Whilst you are using the utility, the ET going through means you pay to SP who are the ones you intended. You don't owe BGas anything if the ET is processed as the action they take is to back out their registration completely meaning they pay nothing either. (or in the case of electricity - 1kwh)

Thanks for all your help and advice guys...I definetely did not sign up with BG or a rogue salesman...that much I do know for sure (and not Scottish Gas either!!!)
I filled out a contract online to switch to Scottish Power (so I'd get my £60 quidco cash back) so I do have a record of signing up with them.
BG have done something wrong or Scottish Power have (they might have transferred me to BG by mistake) either way it's not my mistake so someone is going to pay for this mess and it's not going to be me!
Anyway thanks again for all your help - the boards are brilliant!Tesco is my second home:j0 -

SP can't transfer you, the new Supplier has to put in a request to register you then SP would be told and have a short period to object to it. Take it to Energywatch and watch your supply end up back at SP if they can't prove anything!!!:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
