Norton or AVG or both?

I have just got a new PC. I installed AVG before going online. The machine came with Norton pre-installed (presumably free for x months). Norton keeps trying to access the internet to update, I have been denying access for fear of conflict with AVG.

Should I ditch Norton and stick with AVG?
Should I ditch AVG and use Norton?
Should I allow Norton access and run both?
Advise please!
Cheers,
Peat

    Definitely don't run both.

If you're already familiar with AVG, why not uninstall it and try Norton. You can then do a comparison and see which you prefer.

Or if you're happy with AVG, then stick with it.

I have Norton on one PC and AVG on my laptop. As they run in the background, I don't really "use" them as such, so couldn't choose between them. Norton seem to issue more regular updates of the virus definitions, but perhaps that's just an illusion on my part.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Personally I would delete AVG as a temporary measure whilst you have Nortons and Definately let it update. Unless the antivirus definations are up to date, no antivirus is really going to keep out the latest bugs doing the rounds. When the free subscription is out of date the try Avg and see how you get on. Recommend you also get a Firewall, free ones available from Frans list on http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Tech

It may be possible to run both.

Until recently I used Avast and I wanted to go back to AVG but I wasn't 100% sure. I installed AVG before removing Avast so I could have a look at the AVG's abilities.

When I restarted my computer a box from Avast poped up saying it had detected AVG and it was going to disable its resident protect (the main conflict you have if running two AVs.)

It may be worth having them both on at the same time briefly to see if one of them's willing to give
    :)
  • I would not recommend running both. Multiple versions of anti virus can cause problems and conflicts. In the past i have ran both Norton and AVG. Avg is a less resource hungry porduct and i think it is eveyr bit as good and better than Norton. I a choice between the two AVG. However, as a side note i now run CA Etrust. This by the far and away the best Anti virus product which me and many fellow network engineers swear by.

Maninblack - Can you give us a link to CA Etrust? Is it expensive/good value for money in comparison with other antivirus products? Why would the ordinary pc user choose to use it rather than the free products like AVG? Thanks.

Peat - How did you install AVG before going online? Was this a bought version? I wanted to copy AVG to CD in order to protect a computer used by our community group but you need an email address with the free version in order to get a code number. Thanks.

You can use the same email address to get multiple copies of AVG.

I waited ages for them to send me the link and I ended up entering my details two more times - I ended up with three links to a download and three different registration keys

I think they just want to have your email address - I don't think they link your address to a particular copy/key

But once you have the registration no., how would you copy the AVG to CD rather than to your computer as you have to go online to download it??? (In other words without having to go online on the 2nd computer.)

    Hi Fran

Register for AVG on the first (Internet connected) PC and you will be sent a download link and then a licence key.

Download the program from the download link (it will be called avg6762fu_free.exe or similar depending on the version) - making sure you do 'Save As' rather than 'Run'.  Then go to this page to download the updates as individual files:

    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/4

Burn the main file and all the update files to CD and make a note of the licence key (I would create a text file, paste the key into it then include this file on the CD)

Go to the second PC without an internet connection and run the main installation program from CD, using the licence key in the text file.  Then follow the instructions from here:

    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/565/lng/us/tpl/v5

To update without an internet connection.

    Hope this helps.

sorry- not sure what you're asking ???

    here's what I'd do

    1. Go to the Avg site giving your email address
    2. When you get the link to the download, download it to your desktop
    3. Make a note of the reg key which arrives a few mins after you click the download link
    4. Copy the installer onto a CD
    5. When put the CD into the new computer and run the installer, the first thing it asks you for is the reg key - which you've noted earlier
