Diesel or Petrol
Just about to retire and buy one 'last' new or good demonstrator car, but should it be diesel or petrol ?
The annual mileage will be around 6-8k, but in the next 5-10 years with the government impose heavier taxes / duties on diesel ? Tempted to go for a low mileage diesel hatchback but cautious about the future......

At that mileage pa petrol, avoid the problems of DPF clagging up, lower servicing cost.0

Doing that mileage it's not the tax or cost of fuel you'll need to worry about, as Chrishazle said, it's the cost of a new DPF every few years.0
-
Petrol without a doubt for that sort of mileage.0

Ditto petrol or even a hybrid0

Petrol. Short journeys kill diesel cars. Everyone who has issues with DMF flywheels, EGR valves and DPF filters in diesels do mostly short journeys. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
With 6-8k i would guess its more a local runaround. A hybrid or even an EV might be a good option.0

Petrol or hybrid. You are likely to have all sorts of problems running a modern diesel doing those miles.0

I have a diesel at the moment but am looking for a new car. The only one I've liked so far only comes as a diesel auto or a petrol manual!
I've decided I'm not getting diesel again. I think the re-sale will be terrible over the next couple of years and beyond.
So I'm still looking...0 -
That alone screams "petrol" - or electric, if the range is acceptable.Just about to retire and buy one 'last' new or good demonstrator car, but should it be diesel or petrol ?
