I don't think Christmas should be cancelled, a lot of people look forward to it and enjoy the celebrations. I know when i was growing up, as a child. it couldn't come around fast enough. Even as an adult i've enjoyed it, nights out with mates, family Christmas dinners and parties, lots of good memories. But i'm here on my own now, and it just isn't the same. I'm not miserable, i don't want to stop others enjoying themselves, but it annoys me that Mse towers doesn't tell those posters who want to start thread after thread about Christmas, and now New Year, in the correct part of the forum. Mostly the same few people who have only just joined Mse, hopefully they'll stop posting now until this time in 2018.

Your post which I have quoted confuses the situation. We celebrate Jesus being crucified at Easter or more accurately the Spring Equinox on which the passover happens. According to John, Jesus was crucified on the Eve of passover. Therefore that is the only date we can be sure of which is an entry in the bible.

At Christmas the birth of Jesus is celebrated but that date is nowhere seen in the Bible.

At this time of year we hear from some sources that we should get back to the real meaning of Christmas. Well, the real meaning is a Pagan festival which celebrates the renewal of the sun: The shortest day of the year happens around December 25th and after that the days get longer. Variously called "Yule" Which is principally celebrated with the "Yule log" originally a wooden log thrown on the fire but now commercialised into a chocolate covered Swiss roll.

Like it or lump it, the real meaning of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. Celebrating “Yule” or the winter solstice on or around the 25th of December in the Southern Hemisphere is pretty pointless.

The reason it falls on the same date as various Northern Hemishere pagan winter festivals is due to the lack of a known specific date for Christ’s birth as mentioned above. Early Christians needed a date for a knees up so just picked a date they were familiar with and knew most people would conveniently already have booked off work.

    Confusion reigns supreme lol.

So why is it that some old churches have ancient standing stones in their grounds. That provides a clue as to what happened when the date of older festivals were transformed into Christian observances: It's pretty much obvious that the older religion(s) were hijacked. Lo and behold when your ancient man or woman in the street went to the standing stones for their festival they found a Christian church. They still got their festival but it was now a Christian festival.

Therefore the real meaning of Christmas as well as most dates in the Christian calendar including Easter with its bunny, a symbol of the Goddess of fertility, and the harvest festival are Pagan. "Living a lie" comes to mind.
