What a bunch of scrooges, wanting to cancel Christmas. No doubt it will be because it is offensive to 6 people out of 65 million.

not surprised really about the results. its just got out of hand.
i love Christmas. but year on year its getting earlier and earlier. it ruins the day with such a long lead up to it.

its also now getting a bit silly with all the daft adult advent calender's. most of which seem to be alcohol based.

at a time when the government/shadow government is concerned about how much people are consuming.

just gives them yet another excuse for trying to tax alcohol!

ban everything christmas at least until December the 1st!

What a bunch of scrooges! And it's hardly anti-christian persecution, it's always historically been the people who most think christmas needs to be about Jesus who are most eager to ban it after all.

I know some people who don't "do" christmas but they still have a small christmas dinner and watch the telly and have a nice day. Even people of other religions or christian denominations who don't celebrate christmas (though I wouldn't accuse any of them of being scrooges anyway). I know everyone on here is knitting their own lentils and/or stretching one chicken to provide an entire year of dinners for their family of 15 but this is a special level of meanness! And it's completely unrepresentative of the attitudes in the country, which is odd to me - a lot of polls on here have an unusual skew because of the kinds of people who are here and answering, but I can't remember another one where the people answering are so unlike the people on the street. Half of people in this country don't want christmas banned, so I wonder why half the people on here do - it's interesting but I hope it is more than meanness!
  • I am utterly amazed at the amount of people who say they would cancel Christmas.
After all Jesus went through and suffered for ALL people and then some say they would cancel Christmas?
Unbelievable, Thank you Jesus for all you have done.
I for one would NEVER cancel Christmas.

I agree to a certain extent but ... the shops are busy enough as it is. Imagine if you couldn’t buy anything until December

    Think about this.

Not everyone has a family to spend Christmas with.:(. There will be 2 of us and the cat. He has no parents, siblings or children. I have no parents, children and only exchange Xmas cards with 2 brothers whom I see once in a blue moon.

Yes, we spend little money which is a blessing but most years I feel sad that I have no one to spend it on

I live on my own, don't bother with tree, decs etc. I also largely ignore 99.9% of it all! It always bugs me when on a sat I am doing my normal weekly shop and its madness at how busy it is!

However, I wouldn't cancel it as its pretty much the only time that we can get the entire family with holidays at the same time to meet up!

You don't have to go mad and make it a present orientated thing!

  • Could we have a Christmas on a variable date throughout the year, but not let anyone know what date that is?

Your post which I have quoted confuses the situation. We celebrate Jesus being crucified at Easter or more accurately the Spring Equinox on which the passover happens. According to John, Jesus was crucified on the Eve of passover. Therefore that is the only date we can be sure of which is an entry in the bible.

At Christmas the birth of Jesus is celebrated but that date is nowhere seen in the Bible.

At this time of year we hear from some sources that we should get back to the real meaning of Christmas. Well, the real meaning is a Pagan festival which celebrates the renewal of the sun: The shortest day of the year happens around December 25th and after that the days get longer. Variously called "Yule" Which is principally celebrated with the "Yule log" originally a wooden log thrown on the fire but now commercialised into a chocolate covered Swiss roll.

Getting back to the topic and poll, I'm not sure that I would get rid of Christmas. I know that it is very highly commercialised and an excuse for manufacturers and retailers to make a fat profit. But it is greatly enjoyed by my grandchildren and also brings together family and friends in celebrating Christmas. On the other hand it is a very lonely time for those who don't have family and friends to get together with.

Christmas is just another day to me.

Although I like the bright colourful lights etc I just look forward to all shops and businesses returning to normal.

I don't understand why people shop as though the world is going to end, really pees me off. I've done all my Christmas shopping by the end of Oct.

I buy presents for people (niece, nephew and a few close friends/family) but I don't go all OTT with it.

For the people I care about I make the effort to contact and see them all year round, not just 1 set day.

Past several years I have chosen to work everyday in Dec and around new year. It's great coz the office is so quiet I can get more done in peace. I prefer to take time off when work is busy.
