Help with cake filling

I'd go for cream cheese frosting.
If you are icing the cake you are going to use some frosting for the crumb coat anyway, so you can't make it totally frosting free.
I might make up a little taster for her to try and see she likes it.
Little sad as the butter icing I make is so scrummy...I know its not for me but there is always a little bit left over..lol0 -
Cakes, my favourite subject!
For a chocolate sponge cake the obvious suggestion would be a chocolate based filling.
I've done a chocolate mousse filling in the past using cocoa powder, whipping cream and sugar.
You could also do a ganache filling but that will make it pretty rich
Other suggestions are a fudge filling, a nice set custard filling(which you could also add chocolate to) or for something a bit more unusual a banana pudding or banoffee filling?
Chocolate mousse is a good idea but I feel as its made with cream I'd need to make it on the day and I won't have time...however will keep in mind to make for the monkeys at home.0 -

If they really can't stand it, have they suggested alternatives?
Nope but the gist I have got is someone has taken over the preparation of the baby shower and she is just going along with it. This is why I want to give some options so she has input. I am going to be paid for the making of the cakes (just charging for ingredients not time) so another reason I feel they should have a choice.0 -
I detest buttercream, but would love a ganache , cream cheese or mascarpone based filling.0

Can't you just get a tub of Betty Crocker fudge filling?

I'm not a fan of those...tried them once and didn't think they were brilliant.0 -

Personally, I'd like a filling to be a contrast to the cake, both visually and taste wise. I like chocolate well enough but, for me, chocolate filling in a chocolate cake is too samey.
I'd go for either cream cheese or mascarpone and not very sweet either.0 -
Is the person's issue with buttercream that they don't like the taste or they don't like the texture?
If taste, then something like cream cheese or ganache would work.
If it is texture, it'll have to be something like jam which is totally different.
I have made a chocolate peanut butter icing for chocolate sponge cakes (melted chocolate, butter, smooth peanut butter) which tastes gorgeous and is salty enough to give a nice contrast, but the texture is somewhere between ganache and buttercream so if it is a texture issue that won't help. Also of course you'd have to make sure there were no peanut allergies amongst the guests.0
