Help with cake filling

Morning All...
I thought this may get the best response here but if needs be please move to the food boards.
I need to make a baby shower cake. It will be chocolate sponge but I am having issues with the filling. The person doesn't like buttercream and whipped cream is possibly out due to how it needs to be decorated.
The person says they are happy with jam filling but I feel they may just be saying this so wanted to come up with some other ideas (if there are any). I was going to suggest cream cheese frosting but this is not to far from buttercream.
Does anyone have ideas they could share pretty please?
I am also doing cupcakes before anyone suggests them and I have them sorted.

I'd go for cream cheese frosting.
If you are icing the cake you are going to use some frosting for the crumb coat anyway, so you can't make it totally frosting free.Zebras rock0 -
Cakes, my favourite subject!
For a chocolate sponge cake the obvious suggestion would be a chocolate based filling.
I've done a chocolate mousse filling in the past using cocoa powder, whipping cream and sugar.
You could also do a ganache filling but that will make it pretty rich
Other suggestions are a fudge filling, a nice set custard filling(which you could also add chocolate to) or for something a bit more unusual a banana pudding or banoffee filling?0 -
Chocolate and raspberry go together well ....how about a topping of raspberries glazed with recurrant/raspberry jelly?0

Nutella makes a quick and easy filling.0

I'm not over keen on buttercream either, which is why I always generously add Vanilla extract, might that be an option?0

If someone was kind enough to be making a cake for me, I would be saying 'Thank you very much' rather than 'I don't like buttercream' (what's not to like anyway?).
If they really can't stand it, have they suggested alternatives? No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
How about black cherry jam as a filling. You're nearing black forest gateau going with that.Make £2026 in 2026

I've used caramel as a filling before. I'm also not keen on buttercream but recently made a cake that had buttercream which used butter, icing sugar and custard powder. It was lovely.0

I've got a friend that doesn't do any kind of cream, buttercream or frosting, and he usually just cuts those parts away, as he won't be eating the whole cake, and he wants everyone else to enjoy it. If I'm making a cake that is predominantly just for him, I either slice the layers quite thinly, and sandwich it with plenty of layers of jam, or I cut the centre core out of the baked cake, and slice the top and bottom off the core piece; I place the bottom piece back in, fill it with something like black cherry pie-filling and either leave it open, or replace the top bit. I usually serve it with cream on the side, for people who do like cream.0
