My other half and I have recently moved into an upper cottage flat, its nice enough but the bad weather has brought us slimey slugs-HUGE fat beasts.

they are in the flat and slimed up a couple of steps. Can anyone tell me of the best method to get rid of them. Bought 13.5 kilos of salt, which was immediately caked over the landing, stairs and outside stairs. but to no avail...any other techniques? theyre slime trails were every where and its disgusting. I just dont understand how i'm getting them in an UPPER flat.

beer gardens seem like a waste and when im running out the door first thing in the morning, i dont want soggy beer socks!

i may have to invest in a pet hedgehog by the sounds of things! but i'd just like to hear from someone in a similar situation who has prevailed. im up this late to catch and anialate and my frazzled mind cant take it much longer!

    xx

OH NO I,m in an upper cottage:eek: . I never thought they could get in this far, the garden is awash with them and they'r pals the snails, I wont sleep tonight now.

  • Apparently oat bran will kill them too (when they eat it) and unlike pellets won't harm other wildlife (hedgehogs, birds) or pets.

Although you can get new pellets which are not harmful to animals, birds and children called growing success - available from Wilkinsons or online at tamar organics: http://www.tamarorganics.co.uk/pages/catalogue.php?status=2&cat=8&typename=PEST+CONTROL&prod=613

  • Thanks to everyone for some great tips!! We have suffered with slugs for the 6 years we've been in our house, from the kitchen to the front room and every room in between, like most people i haven't a clue where they're coming from, but i fear there will be a lot of hard work over the next few months sealing the house!!
Even found slug marks on the roof tiles outside!!! mad

They're a sign of dampness (hence appearing in older houses more often). Finding the source of moisture would be a good start.

Found 2 more last night, im sure they live under the kitchen units, and come out under the plinths.

To date im sure ive found 12-15 which end up getting thrown into the garden, not to be found in the morning.

Worse case, i found one had climbed up the unit door, and onto the worktop.

Think i need to pull the plinths off, and get the hoover in there. Hopefully find a nice slug farm and clear it out.

We initially thought they were coming in by the kitchen door, so we sealed all this into place. Then we started to see them in the dogs bowl.

Suspect they have entered either through the dogs bowl, being the bowls outside and transferred inside, or in through the old hole and living ripe behind sink / dishwasher etc.

We had a big problem with slugs in our old house. We pulled up the floorboards and it was a slugfest underneath, truly revolting.
All the joists and floorboards had to be replaced through the whole of downstairs. Slugs go for damp so you need to find the problem and remedy it rather than just killing the slugs that come up for a change of scenery.
    Best of luck.....
  • I just had to post on here as I've had the same problem, and I'm using past tense with my fingers crossed.
I've read nearly every forum & advice page available.
I was getting slugs in the kitchen & living room. I googled and read all the advice and this is what I did:
I put salt down around all the places I could tell they were coming in and it caught (and killed) them. Then we sprayed SAS slug repellent under the carpet around the skirting boards and (touchwood) we haven't had any since. SAS slug repellent is yucca based (which slugs hate, I've become an expert)and child & animal friendly and is designed for in & out of the house.
We've just discovered a little one footed critter coming in from a different side of the room so we are going to put salt down and then spray that side of the room and am confident it will stop him!
Just google SAS slug repellent and it will bring up the various sites you can get it from. I couldn't find it in garden centres. We found postage to be very expensive (£6.50) but worth every penny.
I hope you found this useful. I hate slugs!
PS Never put salt on top of one, I found out the hard way! I was nearly physically sick! It's disgusting!

  • Use salt, it is supposed to deter them
