  • My other half and I have recently moved into an upper cottage flat, its nice enough but the bad weather has brought us slimey slugs-HUGE fat beasts.

they are in the flat and slimed up a couple of steps. Can anyone tell me of the best method to get rid of them. Bought 13.5 kilos of salt, which was immediately caked over the landing, stairs and outside stairs. but to no avail...any other techniques? theyre slime trails were every where and its disgusting. I just dont understand how i'm getting them in an UPPER flat.

beer gardens seem like a waste and when im running out the door first thing in the morning, i dont want soggy beer socks!

i may have to invest in a pet hedgehog by the sounds of things! but i'd just like to hear from someone in a similar situation who has prevailed. im up this late to catch and anialate and my frazzled mind cant take it much longer!

    xx

My god this brings back terrible memories for me.
We had this for years"all over the kitchen" every morning.
In the knife n fork draw every where.
Anyway we sealed every possible gap up with silicone, the house was dry "no damp" but like as been mentioned they are usually present around damp areas.
Years later we had an extension to the Kitchen when I was digging the footings out we exposed the area around the drain/gully outside the Kitchen where the sink waste flows into. When we removed the pot gully the ground was a heaving mess of slugs and the brickwork was goosed this was leading under the floor joist and under the sink.
We filled the drain in with concrete as we was moving the drain to the new external wall.
We never had a problem after that day.

We get them in our conservatory, I got 14 one night a couple of weeks back. Not sure if they're just overflowing from the garden though as I have collected, in the last 2 days, over 150 slugs from the garden!

Anyone using slug pellets should bear in mind not to use too many- the idea being that a few will attract and kill the slugs , but too many pellets will deter them and then they will literally climb the walls. Tidiness also helps combat them -they seem to like living in old stacks of plant pots and other plastic containers left lying around.
  • All the recent rain has meant that my beer traps are too weak as are the coffee grounds and now that they have demolished all my beans both runner and broad they have come indoors to see if I have anything tasty there.

I am thinking about nematodes in the soil as I have even less qualms about killing them after they have demolished all my beans, my gazanias and half my pansies and violas in pots which are up on garden chairs to keep them relatively safe. I regularly stomp on any snails I can find with great glee.

Contrary to popular belief slugs can climb walls and doors so don't just slug proof ground level gaps. Snails have always been able to do this but the shell is a bit of a handicap in squeezing through small gaps although a handy buoyancy aid when swimming in water butts.

Has anyone tried rough gravel on paths near the house? If it would deter slugs and snails as well as acting as an audible warning of visitors I would gladly put up with cats using it as cat litter.;)
  • I encourage the birds to my garden by feeding them. We now have a very smart thrush who feeds on slugs and snails. Every now and then I hear it bashing a snail to break it's shell so he can feed himself:j :j

We get a few in the garden after dark, but I don't mind them too much.

  • I'd look at taking the carpet up - if they've got in once, They've probably found a nice patch of rot and laid eggs (yuk). The salt should help too (it's quite cheap and not dangerous to wildlife in the same way a nasty blue pellet is)

  • Gosh I am glad I don't have slugs in the house, that would really freak me out. I am so sorry for all you guys and hope you get it sorted. In the garden I grow things in pots and tubs and I bought copper tape to put around the top of all the pots - it looks pretty and the slugs and snails don't seem to be able to get across it due to the electric shock that bella talked about. It's the first year I have found anything except slug pellets to stop them and unlike pellets you aren't in danger of hurting any other animals and you don't have to keep putting them down.

I have to say my OH was hanging out the washing the other afternoon and found 43 big fat slugs on the lawn!!! The brave guy stuck on his gardening gloves and picked up each one and 'disposed' of them. I didn't ask how, I was just glad they were gone, presumed dead. I just can't work out WHY they were all on the lawn and not on the flower beds around the edge of it..

Yuck, I had them in my first house which was an old terrace house. No matter what we did the trails were greeting us in the mornings so sold up and moved. Next few houses were fine then shock horror, moved into a year old house and saw trails inside the hall way near the front door. Proper freaked me out! Phoned the builders and they sorted out the front door and so far so good. Lots of the damn things in the garden though and now they are really fat and black. Oh and the opaque greeny yellowy ones are even worse. Wouldn`t be so bad if it would only stop raining in the UK.
