I'm selling my car and it has a personal plate.
I want to keep the plate so I've gone onto the DVLA site, paid £80 and I have the retention certificate. The car now has been assigned a new reg number by the DVLA so I'm waiting for the new V5.
However, the car is taxed and I'm paying by monthly direct debit.
Now the car has a different reg what do I do as the DVLA site doesn't help.
Is the car still taxed? Who do I inform?
Insurance is easy to sort but tax is confusing me. Also, how do I cancel the tax once the car is sold?

In the old days they used to send a new VED disc with the new reg on it, I would guess it is just done electronically, but you can ring them tomorrow.0

As its the same car and owner with a different reg its likely the system will know. Keep checking the new reg online, it can take a few days for the system to update.

Thanks. Looked online and neither plate is recognised so I'm guessing like you said, system needs updating.0

I did the same on 23/11 and just now the tax is showing correctly on the new plate on 27/11 so it should not take long to update.0

OP. To answer your last question.
You personally do not cancel the ved , once a car is sold the tax is automatically cancelled and a refund sent to the previous owner, ie you.0
