cordless phone - unable to make calls

Received a call this morning but when finished the call and returned handset to the docking point it did not light up as it normally does and eventually made the high-pitched whining noise.
I tried using one of the other phones (one cordless, one fixed) but could not get dialling tone, just a slight buzz. I've disconnected what I take to be the faulty handset insofar as I've unplugged the docking point but that has not made a difference.
Help! Please, what can I do in order to be able to make or receive calls on this landline.

Unplug everything from the telephone sockets, and plug in a corded phone to the master socket to see if you get a dial tone? (or is that what you mean when you say you've tried a 'fixed' phone?)
I bought a cheap corded phone from Argos after someone once gave me similar advice in this forum.

Thanks.
Yes, my use of "fixed" was for the corded phone. I've got one cordless on a main base unit in one room (hardly ever used), one with a docking point in the sitting room, and one corded in another in a study.
Will go and get down on my hands and knees under the desk and see what I can do.0 -
Your post is a bit unclear - do you not get a dialling tone with the corded phone in the master socket either? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Corded phone just has buzzing sound.0

Does your master socket have a removeable faceplate? If so, I suggest that you remove this and plug directly into the test socket.
This should eliminate any internal house wiring.
If there is still no dial tone, then you should report the fault to your telephone provider.0 -
Hope it is sorted on Monday if I don't succeed today.0

If it is a fault on the external line then you can ask to have calls transferred to another number, such as a mobile, while it's fixed. As said above though, you need to test and ask your provider to check for faults. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Because if the provider sends openreach and the fault is on your internal wiring rather than external, you'll get charged and it's over £100.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230
