Cheapest way to get live tv in second room

Options
Hope you can help.

We have a shonky aerial into our lounge, which is no longer working very well and making viewing via the Humax box impossible. The cost of getting the aerial fixed/replaced sounds expensive.

We have sky in an adjacent room and would like to just get an additional sky box in our lounge now to save on the new aerial costs.

When I look at the sky website they are promoting their sky Q box for £199 plus £12 p/month. I don't want to spend this much.

I also don't want something that always runs off the wifi as we do have buffering issues when everyone is online and because of the thick walls!

Any ideas? I don't mind paying £12 p/month for a second box, but don't want the £200 cost for something that sounds like it runs off the wifi.

Many thanks

  • How long have you been with Sky, it's a lot cheaper if you've got 15+ years with them.
  • We’ve been with them for two years.

I suspect getting the aerial fixed will be cheaper than £199 and even if it isn't you won't have any monthly payments afterwards so getting the aerial fixed is definitely the cheapest.

Yep, either £343 for a 12 month contract or £415 for an 18 month one for Sky Q, this is extra on top of whatever they're paying Sky at the moment. Getting a Freeview aerial fitted is going to be way cheaper.
  • I actually just did something like this this weekend.

I bought a sky+hd box from shpock for £15, and then I wired another shotgun cable to the dish and now have free to air satellite channels running independantly in the second room.

most sky installed dishes have a quad lnb fitted so you can plug in 2x shotgun cables.

If yours does not you can always buy a quad (or even octo lnb) from ebay for not much money. (£13 for quad, £20 for octo).

That would be the best bet to get sky working on a second room for cheap.

Dont get these rubbish sky eye devices, they're terrible

Getting installation by a professional is relatively cheap, I got a quote for £40. But I did it myself becasue contractors just want to get in and get out of your property quick and rush the job.

The sky people who originally installed the cable put the ugly black cable through a very visible location in the hallway, I rerouted the cabled and fed it through a broom cupboard and the boiler room. it was a major fidgit and timeconsuming so I understand why the contractors don't do it. But the end result is much better and the cables are out of sight.

I also used a nicer white cable which looked neater
