I've just spotted this on the Deals Blog on the Main Site,
I know there are many savvy moneysavers on here who could do just as well, or better :D but there might be some inspiring ideas :)

Make four people five dinners for £20

You may know Miguel Barclay as “the £1 chef” or from his Instagram account (@onepoundmeals). Since launching the account, he’s released two books, One Pound Meals and Fast and Fresh, creating simple recipes to make individual meals for just £1.

Being the savvy MoneySavers that we are, we wanted to know what happened to the remaining ingredients if they were only being used for one meal – were they going to waste? We asked him, and together we set him the challenge of making four people five dinners for £20, making sure to use up all the ingredients.

Miguel came back with five recipes: moussaka with rocket & feta salad; chicken and leek pie with peas; meatballs and spaghetti, pea and feta quiche with rocket; and mini Turkish pizzas with pea and feta salad..........

Its an interesting challenge, and I agree its a good idea to remind bloggers that recipes have to work in the real world.

I like the savvyshoppers cookbook meal plans as she always does what youve asked Miguel to do, plan for a week not just a single meal. I think her latest meal plan is just over £27 for a whole week of meals for 4 people. If my maths is right that will be under £20 for 5 days of meals. But her prices are based on Aldi and Lidl so will bit higher if bought elsewhere.
    weaving through the chaos...

I usually spend under £1/DAY, not per meal!
£1/meal is a VERY generous budget for many.

  • No oil on the ingredients list....no salt/pepper (instructions tell us to 'season to taste')....so is he assuming everyone has these in their 'store-cupboard'?

Then there is the sourcing of the necessary ingredients.....it's by no means a one-stop shop...At least 3 supermarkets would need to be visited to get the prices quoted...with no thought for the cost of getting there and back ...either the extra petrol for the additional shopping trips, or the busfare. (We have a small Tesco on our main shopping street...Aldi/Lidls/Morrisons is a bus ride away...and I have no idea how far our nearest Sainsbury's is - too far for me to get there anyway!)

And on a personal note...those meals are very light on the veggies!
