You do on the Radio Player app which I use

On the BBC Radio player (Not iPlayer) you only need the VPN if you want to listen to programmes they have a licence to broadcast, i.e sports events, concerts etc. These are replaced with a 'digital rights' message.
Normal radio programmes don't need a VPN.

  • Sorry RumRat, but that’s not the case for BBC radio stations on the Radio Player iPhone app. I am in Spain and it plain doesn’t work for Radio 2, etc. without the vpn. It’s not the end of the world but as I have a paid for CyberGhost and it’s running anyway it’s no hardship.

The BBC vpn thing might be peculiar to this player, and it’s not a sports thing, they are often blocked on internet, even in the UK.

As an aside, CyberGhost works for the BBC TV iPlayer, ITV Hub etc.

I've not needed a VPN in France when using it......
BBC also says you don't need it for Radio Player.

Maybe it's another weird IOS thing.

    From http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/radio/mobile/radio-outside-uk:

"Can I listen to BBC iPlayer Radio outside of the UK?
You can listen to most of our live and on-demand radio content on BBC iPlayer Radio from anywhere in the world.
Sometimes we might not be able to make certain content available outside of the UK. For example, for rights reasons we may not be able to show certain sports coverage outside of the UK. Music content may also be restricted to within the UK for rights reasons."

It’s not the BBC Radio iPlayer that I’m talking about, it’s the Radio Player app that is called “Radio Player” by UK Radio Player Ltd. it has lots of UK radio stations to listen to and does not work for BBC stations when you appear to not be in the UK

    OK. Crossed wires....
Well the OP now knows not do download that app and to stick with BBC iPlayer Radio when abroad, if he wants to listen to BBC stations without a VPN.....
    So, a win win thread......;)

ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.
  • I have been abroad for years, back in good old Blighty now though.
English radio whilst driving is not easy, as others have said 198LW is often obtainable on an old car radio. When not driving I use a satellite dish and an old Sky box, no subscription. The dish is fairly easy to align with a good compass and a cheap satellite finder. Have a look on Ebay for caravan equipment but don't pay for expensive self aligning stuff.
You can also sometimes get British or American Forces radio on FM.
