Fixing on stud walls...help!

As with all new builds, all the walls are hollow
This means we are having a problem fixing anything to the walls (or we just have no idea how to go about it and if we can..?)
We want (or would like) to put up a bathroom cabinet/shelf...is this possible on these sort of walls? Me and my partner have NO idea about this sort of thing, and just need a pointer on how we might be able to do it?
Also, in our kitchen, the walls are hollow, yet we have kitchen cabinets all up solidly on the wall...? My question is... 1. How did the builders manage this? and 2. We would like to add our own cabinets to make more, how could we do this?
Anyone with the proper knowledge about these sort of walls and fixing on them would be greatfully recieved for two non DIYers.:(

Fix into the studs, or use proper hollow wall fixings, or a combination of both.
Something like these ....

lots of choice.
Personally I'd use spring toggles on a bathroom cabinet. You might need to shorten the bolts.0 -
My fastener of choice for heavier applications http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Duratool-Mca432-Cavity-Anchor-4-X-32/111882614636?epid=1245579803&hash=item1a0cb9376c:g:y8AAAOSw-zxWolFh
Aldi / Lidl sometimes do a set complete with the setting tool0 -

use these all the time, never used a setting tool though, always just screw the bolt in slowly until it squashs the fitting into the wall. You have to be careful not to spin the whole fitting as it wreaks the hole.0 -
Those are the ones we use too, been using them for over 30 years.0

The wall units in the kitchen will be held up by the kitchen fitter drilling through the plasterboard then into the blockwork and using wall plugs in the blockwork to support the units0

Worse to drill and fix on than the partition walls. Plasterboard - void - cinder-block (drill bit moves off desired line)
I've found these type of plastic fixings quite good in both types... https://www.screwfix.com/p/fischer-high-performance-universal-plugs-ux8-8-x-50mm-100-pack/20669
NB it's essential to use a tool with the compressible fixing mentioned in earlier posts, judging by the poorly fitted ones in this house (by previous owners).
If you can find the wooden studs in the walls then that's the best fixing location you will get, though!0 -
The setting tools are great; money well spent; not that it's much.0

Heard good things about Gripit fixings for heavy duty stuff but I’ve had success with Rawl uno plugs which can be used on both stud and dot and dab walls.0
