i couldn't do that - i needed a sample of people to validate and test my idea - and the women chosen had a high risk of developing post natal depression - they were not chosen by me, but by health visitors and Gps

It won't help with your situation but maybe for someone else - could you have made joining the research group dependent on signing a form saying that the ideas were your intellectual property and that they would not use them. This must be a problem for everyone who trials ideas and products so there must be some way of protecting them.

If you haven't done it already, giving your process a name will probably help to separate it from people copying the idea.

Go with all the other advice but don't let her distract you from your own project. It sounds as if you are going to offer a professional service and I'm sure the difference will soon show to the users.
  • Just to make sure all bases are covered, it would be worthwhile taking legal advice before you start. Are you going to be giving up your current job whilst doing this business or are you going to try to run the two together for a bit or is the plan to do both together full stop? Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you find out if there is any conflict of interest in doing your current job whilst running your business (some companies have clauses in their contracts preventing you from earning money seperately doing a similar thing - don't know if this applies to NHS though).

Anyway, best of luck - anything that helps mums with PND is a brilliant thing!!:o

Are you doing it as part of your paid NHS work? If so, then I don't think that the business idea has anything to do with it. If it's research then that is for the benefit of the client, not as a business venture isn't it?

    just to clarify

i work 1 1/2 days for the NHS, i was on a part time research programme, during this programme, i identified that there was perhaps a little more i could offer. so i discussed it with my managers. They thought it was a great idea but i hadn't got funding to trial. anyway i sourced the material on loan to which they agreed to take responsibility for, and the network of gp's i work with, sounded out some patients to trial. when coming to view some sessions, my managers (and GP's) were delighted with my work (its not clinical work) and whilst they were looking at me, it was the patients who were asking me to do this privately. it was never my intention initially to start my own business, but my bosses have encouraged me to go forward, infact they have tried to source funds for me to set up on my own, helped me with risk assessments and policies etc.

i will continue with my nhs work, but perhaps offer 2 1/2 days privately.

i occasionally run parenting and behaviour courses - these are free, yet some people prefer to have a private course and wont come to the free sessions  i dont know why they want to do this as i always tell them that they get the same material on the free courses!!! i only charge the basic, to cover drinks, room hire, copying and petrol (usually about £15 for about a 2 hr session).
    Give blood - its free
  • I think you should just go ahead with your plans and continue :)

    Goodluck with it all
