Refused a phone contract

Hi - I have just been turned down for a new phone contract with 02 due to a bad credit score. I am already with 02 and have been for many years with no problems. I have checked my credit score with the help of MSE and it has come back as excellent. I have no loans and no missed payments on my cc. My income has remained the same for the past few years too - although it is very low. I am at a loss as to why they have refused me! I do not wish to reapply at this stage until I can discover why this has suddenly happened. Any ideas or help gratefully received!

why are they credit checking if you have a contract already?
  • I think you will get replies suggesting all 3 cra's should be checked for any errors etc.

My credit history is quite poor...ive found Network 3 tend to take anyone on for contracts and Tesco who use o2 network have given me a 12 month contract when others wouldn't.

Personally i cant fault Tesco Tariffs and signal being o2 is first class as is the 4G signal.
  • Thank you for the reply - I assume it's because I am due an upgrade so will start a new contract?
  • Thank you - I will try the other Credit companies to see what they bring up. I'll look at Tesco tariffs - I am due an upgrade (as happens every couple of years) so at a loss as to why I have rejected!
  • You usually get credit checked when i comes to taking a new contact/tariff - a lot may have changed for a person in 12/18/24 months, or whatever the length of the original tariff.. Especially if you are taking a more expensive tariff

I've never been credit checked when upgraded my phone I'm with EE. Have you ever been late with any payments ect?

If you are not happy with the decline can you not appeal to O2?

Please don’t call it an ‘upgrade’, it’s nothing of the sort. You are merely at the end of one contract, meaning you’ve more than paid for your phone, and now it’s time to start another contract, where you will pay for your next phone. You’d be surprised how many people just carry on at the end of a contract and pay 00’s more than the phone is worth.
If your ‘old’ phone is ok, go for a sim only deal. I get 4Mb of data and unlimited texts and minutes for £9 a month from 3.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • Just to add, a new contract means a new search. I’ve had loans with Barclays before, but they’re not going to just give me another without checking. What was ok 12/18 months ago may not be now.

You can upgrade your current phone when nearing the end of your contract.

Usually this does not require a credit check, although your bills must be up to date.

You can also take out a second line, on a current contract, again, this will not incur a credit check, only new contracts and upgrades from sim only plans are credit checked.

This applies to most UK mobile networks.

You must of mistakenly clicked on "new contract", rather than "upgrade".

Whilst I’m willing to bow to your superior knowledge on the credit check, it’s still not an ‘upgrade’.
