Laptop screen stretched horizontally

I'd appreciate any help. My Acer laptop 5542 running Windows 10 has opened up with the screen horizontally stretched. I googled and looked up what to do and it seems to say it is the screen resolution or drivers (the last post on here about this was 2013).
I've checked on the display and I only have options of 800x600 or 1024x768 (recommended) and it won't let me change them.
I checked the drivers and it said they are up to date so I don't know what to try next.

You obviously haven't got the correct drivers installed. My guess is that it is using the generic Microsoft Display driver.
The natural resolution for your laptop is 1366 X 766
I believe it is ATI graphics on your laptop so go to http://support.amd.com/en-us/download and let it autodetect your graphics Chipsets and select the correct package0 -
Many thanks for your advice. I followed the link and download and it completed everything and then at the end there was a message to say "Components are already installed".
I checked again on the display to see if I could alter the resolution but it stayed the same as before.
I'd appreciate any more suggestions you might have.0 -
Go into device manager , expand display drivers.
Right click on your display adapter and choose uninstall device.
Reboot your computer0 -
I've gone into Display adapters and there are "ATl Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series" and also "Glance Speed Boost".
Sorry if it's a dumb question but do I uninstall both of them or just the first one? I've never done anything like this and am worried about doing the wrong thing.
Also do I do anything else after deleting one (or both) of them?0 -
I definitely dont like the sound of that.
A cursory look over the internet shows it is related to screen sharing software !
Ok,
Go in to control panel, programs and features, uninstall Glance
Then go back to device manager, first uninstall glance adapter and then the other one.
Then reboot0 -
Oh dear that sounds worrying. OK I've done exactly what you said to uninstall and delete them and now I've rebooted.
What should I do next - do I have to download drivers again?0 -
go back into device manager and right click on your display adapter, choose update driver software
Let windows do its stuff
Has the glance one gone now ?0 -
OK I've done that and the update has put back the original driver (or it has the same name) and deleted the Glance one.
I've rebooted again in case but I still can't alter the screen resolution.0 -
Can you open the ATI utlity from the programs list (might even be running in the taskbar) & adjust that way, rather than through the windows settings?0

I too am using an Acer laptop and have the same squashed screen as OP after another £*&%$ Windows update
I too have tried updating y my display driver and it says I already have the latest version.
Soooo fed up with having a problem every single time Microsoft do this. Why can't they warn people the day before and tell them how to create a restore point in case the update causes problems?
When I go here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
and choose the following:
Step 1: Notebook graphics
Step 2: Radeon HD Series
Step 3: Mobility Radeon HD 4xxx Series
then at Step 4 (selecting o/s) it doesn't offer a W10 option.0
