DHL stole my diamond ring

Evening all,

hoping to get some advice as to where i stand and see if anyone has any advice for me.

I bought a ring whilst on holiday, It wasn't ready in time for when i left so i got one of the reps to bring it back.

I arranged for DHL too pick the ring up and deliver it back to me on a next day insured service.

When i received the ring it was just an empty box. I know the ring was in there initially as the DHL driver opened the package in front of her and signed to say the contents were all present before delivering it to me.

I can tell from the packaging that it has been re-opened twice (or more) before it got to me.

I could only insure the ring for what i paid for it, but its going to be considerably more for me to replace it in the UK. And i don't feel its right that i should have to claim through the insurance when its clear a DHL employee stole it.

I've reported it to the Police who are looking into it, but i don't hold much hope.

Thanks
Denis

What did DHL say? Are they investigating?

Who advised dhl to open it
  • I know the ring was in there initially as the DHL driver opened the package in front of her and signed to say the contents were all present before delivering it to me.

    I don't understand this....
I can tell from the packaging that it has been re-opened twice (or more) before it got to me.
    Or this...
  • So apparently its DHL's policy when they do a collection from a customer to check the contents of the packaging, and they have to write on the tracking slips whats in. The DHL rep on the phone said the pickup driver confirmed the contents of the ring.

The travel rep put the ring box (with the ring in) and the certificate of authenticity into a sealed plastic bag (like the royal mail special delivery ones). The driver opened this then resealed it with DHL tape.

When i received the ring, the re-sealed plastic envelope was inside another cardboard DHL envelope, which also had DHL re-pack tape on it. But the inner bag that had the ring on, you can see old DHL tape has attempted to have been peeled back from under the fresh tape, so the bag was opened again.

DHL said they have investigated and can't find it. And thats pretty much it - it felt like this is a common occurrence from the reactions on the phone.

  • yes I'm covered by my insurance, just don't see why i should claim from my insurance when DHL were responsible for it :(

It sounds like you have fairly concrete evidence that the ring was lost in transit so the insurance will cover it.

But you don't know that DHL "stole" anything, the packaging could have been damaged (hence the loss and re-packing) or the package could have been subject to a customs inspection and lost/stolen at that point.

Obviously you're not entitled to more than you paid for it. Why can't you simply call the supplier and re-order the ring once DHL have paid up?
  • Yes I understand I don’t have actual proof it was stolen but i can’t see any other way that the ring could accidntly have slipped out and then the empty ring box be put back in and revealed.

I’ll have them mcontact the jewellers in turkey and see what they say.

This is the nature of insurance really. I realise you want "justice". DHL will ultimately "pay" in the form of increased premiums and the employee(s) will ultimately "pay" by being investigated, having more scrutiny in future, etc.
