Best places to buy in Manchester for a first-timer (that isn't Didsbury)

  • Hi everyone,

Just a quick update - we visited Sale at the weekend and had a good walk around in the rain! It was a nice area, but the house we went to look at was pricey and we just didn't get a good feel for it. On the Sunday, we viewed a house in Cheadle Heath which didn't suit our requirements that well and so we used the time to explore a bit of Edgeley. I've been hearing quite good things about this area from colleagues in work and have seen a few first time buyers renovating houses on Instagram in this area which I thought was quite a good sign (yes, I'm using Instagram to research places now!). We've also looked at a house in Hazel Grove which we do like, but it's on at the top of our budget and needs quite a bit of modernisation - so I'm feeling quite nervous about it! I think we'll go back for a visit over the weekend and have a walk around in the daylight!

I'm hoping more places come onto the market in the next few months and that I'll actually get 'the feeling' about a place rather than nerves taking over me! Thanks everyone for your advice so far.

Stockport is having a lot of money spent on it at the minute and if you are looking for something for the next 5 years or so, Edgeley could be a good investment.

Just pop around there on a Saturday about 2pm when there's a match on to see if you can live with the 'atmosphere'.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your replies - I think we've found somewhere in Edgeley, Stockport.

We looked at a few houses in Prestwich & Cheadle Hulme, but lost out - one house in Prestwich went for £30K over the 'offers over'!!

I've also discovered we are getting priced out of most areas now like Prestwich and Monton for the type of house we'd like. We loved Cheadle village and I'm hoping the fact we are just a short drive/lengthy walk away will be okay as we could always stop by for a drink and dinner. I'm also thinking Stockport itself is starting to get quite a bit of an investment with new cafes/businesses opening up.

If anyone has any more tips or advice I'd love to hear :)
  • Hello, I am currently having the exact same conundrum, looking for the right place to buy. I'm really interested in how you're finding Edgeley? It's on my short list at the moment.

One of my mates has just bought a little further up the A6 in Offerton.

It is not an area I know well but where he is looks like a nice enough area. I imagine that is another area that will benefit from the money being spent in Stockport.

    Hello,
I’m really enjoying the area! We are renovating the house and have gone back to brick so have been pretty busy with that, but it’s great to see so many people move to the area. A lot of houses seem to come up for sale and are sold within a few weeks. It’s so handy being near the M60 and there’s been two new shops open up - a vegan beauty salon and a homeware/candle shop. Hopefully more businesses will open up soon. But it’s also great to be so near to Stockport which also has some great restaurants. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck :T
