Best places to buy in Manchester for a first-timer (that isn't Didsbury)

Once you are out of 'studentville' (Rusholme, Fallowfield, Withington and Didsbury) you don't actually miss it much and when we returned to visit friends found it quite dirty and unpleasant in a way we hadn't noticed when living there!

I would avoid Walkden personally and whilst South Swinton/ Worsley are nice, there isn't much there is terms of shops pubs and restaurants.

We are due to view a house on Walkden Road which I think is actually in Walkden but it's noted as Worsley on the advert! I think we will check it out, but I've googled it quite a bit and people have similar views to yours about it. The house looks really nice - but I feel the location could be a huge minus!
  • Definitely think it's worth popping in to a few local estate agents if you're not so knowledgeable about the area. They might advise you and show you what sort of things are in the areas.
If you're keen they might remember you when something comes up and get in touch.
Don't forget though that they're salespeople and do your own research too.

I used to live in a few places in and around Salford and it's really hit and miss. Some really nice streets next to not so nice streets - like anywhere I guess. It's also undergone a lot of regeneration, so is not the area it once was. I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help there.
    Good bus links though!

My favourite place to live was Chorlton, but its definitely not cheap. I've now settled on the east side of Greater Manchester (Tameside) and love it, but I wouldn't describe it as up and coming.

Walkden road is a big main road, you're best avoiding it.

The whole of Walkden is technically in Worsley, but the South Swinton, Roe Green and anywhere south of the East Lancs (A580) is 'proper' Worsley.

Worlsey is in Salford and is nice, but as I say, lacking in a proper village centre in terms of bars, shops etc. Though George's is nice.

Monton is also in Salford - the Monton side of Eccles is ok, very up and coming (it'll take a good few years to up and come though, so be prepared to wait), we have a fair few friends who have recently moved to Eccles, so it is definitely moving. Irlams o'th height is ok as well, though again lacking in a 'centre', and what centre there is is lacking in anything beyond pound shops.

It was mainly the area - it was off one of the most popular roads in Stockport, but there was very little amenities around. We viewed a terrace house and it had a lot of potential (I loved the dining room) as well as loft space - but I think the location just wasn't for us. I've heard quite a bit about other parts of Stockport (including Edgeley) so think we will keep those in mind too!

How could I forget Edgeley, FTB heaven, almost exclusively made up of terraced houses! I would say that the "centre" of Edgeley ie the main shopping street is a bit run down and doesn't have the villagey feel you like, but it's not far from Cheadle centre which is more like that (plus it's so close to the train station and Stockport town centre that its location wins in other respects). If you walk around Edgeley you'll probably prefer the feel of the streets around Alexandra Park and the reservoirs.

There's a fair amount of terraces near the centre of Cheadle too but they are overpriced IMO compared to the other areas I've mentioned.

Sorry, I seem to have got a bit carried away there!

    Was it this one?

If so, then, yes it's practically the centre of walkden and very busy. Plus you'd never make any money on the house unless there's a big upsurge in the area.

Indeed it was that one! I knew the price was too good to be true! I think we will view it and see how they've managed to convert the cellar into a room. It looks like such a nice place, but I feel with it being on a busy main road it may not be what we are looking for.

Do you know much about Flixton? I've seen a few nice properties in that area and can see it's near to Urmston too.

    Thanks for your help!

Urmston is broken up in to Urmston 'proper', Flixton and Davyhulme. All nice and pretty close to Urmston centre. Parts of Flixton are lovely, and parts are smelly due to the sewage works near by - but you'd be able to smell that on any house viewings easily.

The estate agents will call anything with an M28 postcode 'Worsley' even though that goes all the way out to Little Hulton!

Monton is nice but I ruled it out because hardly any of the houses had parking or a garden. I moved to a more suburban bit. Have you looked at Boothstown, Ellenbrook or Mosley Common?

More info needed though, where will you be working and how will you be commuting? One of the downsides of the Worsley area and the bits around it is the rubbish transport, no tram here, and the traffic into the city centre at rush hour is always at a crawl whether thats the East Lancs or the 602, and it starts practically at your front door. I don't work 9-5 so it doesn't bother me but if I did I'd probably want to be near a tram stop. Eccles has one, but its not that close to Monton.

Thanks for your reply - I haven't looked at those areas but will have a search! We work in the city centre (NQ and along Oxford Road) and today when we went to view the property above, we left work at 4.30 for the viewing at 5.45 and it said we'd reach it at 6.20! So think we've learnt a lesson about the commute! I think we'd be happy with a tram line and buses though or even the trains - just a matter of how much it would all cost!

There's just so much to think about and it can be so overwhelming!

I don't think I'd recommend Worsley/Swinton/Walkden for your commute to be honest. The morning traffic starts at 7am and is solid until about 9.30 going into town. Same in the evening from about 4pm to well after 6. There are buses, but they get full and they aren't as quick as a tram or train. If I had to commute for a 9-5 I'd move I reckon!

Have you considered buying in the centre of town so that you can walk to work or do you want a garden/house/schools etc?
