government rarely increases taxes drastically, they'll probably make it £30 a year more expensive to tax or therabouts.
The fuel savings are reduced by the long term maintenance costs of modern diesel cars - AdBlue, DPF regens, eventual DPF failure, turbos, egr, dual mass flywheels. Add the fact that Diesel particulate emissions are harmful, and the result is that I personally wouldn’t have one again.
Modern car Diesel engines are barely more efficient than they were 10 years ago, but with loads of Heath Robinson devices bolted on to reduce emissions. When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on0 -

That'd normally be the case, but when you're talking about a 7 seater SUV, they are probably quite hard to source in petrol, and you'd probably be looking at a 2.4+ litre which will have frankly awful performance and economy.
So the breakeven point is probably lower than the 9k/year, and the extra torque will make a huge difference to drivability.0 -

It's a Nissan X-Trail and I need automatic and for some reason there are none available in the country in Petrol with 7 seats. May be that variant doesn't exists.
I have checked Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa and they are all diesels as well.0 -

It could even be that the drop is now causing further drops, it’s a vicious circle, you see a drop, that means no one wants one, so you decide you don’t want one adding to the decrease.
Manufacturer see that and issue statements saying they won’t be developing future diesel cars, adding to the decline, and so on.
p.s. i had foolishly missed that diesel seems to be the only option for this kind of car. Well, in that case suck it up but dont expect to get 50% back in 4 to 5 years, not gonna happen.
Drop in new car sales, does not equal drop in value of used ones.
I would say the most drop in sales is where there are viable petrol alternatives. With SUVs there tend not to be.0 -

Skoda Kodiaq is a 7 seater and can be got in petrol auto.0 -
I have not seen anything about diesels in budget. Did I miss anything?0

The BBC's "key points" says...Vehicle excise duty for diesel cars that do not meet latest standards to rise by one band in April 2018
The transcript does not appear to be available yet.0 -
Not sure I'd be looking at Diesel now as resale prices are dropping off a cliff since they are the son of the Devil, plus new diesels this year have fallen by a third.0
