Problems with online unlocking companies

Has anyone else had problems with online stores offering unlocking facilities? I made 3 attempts from 3 different companies before giving up and going to my local store in town, which managed to unlock my phone with no issues. The companies I tried were;
unlockmymobilephone.co.uk - provided links to other sites where you could get unlock codes, unfortunately not for my phone. Was a bit surprised to find out that the links were offering the unlock codes for free generally but when I told them that I had not been able to get an unlock code for my phone did refund the £2.99 I'd paid them immediately.
unlockmymobilephone.co.uk - put in all my details PRIOR to payment, they took the payment and then told me that they couldn't unlock my phone!!! Tried to contact them about a refund through paypal AND the email address they provide but they didn't answer. Paypal said they couldn't help as an unlock code is a virtual item.
MobileUnlocked.co.uk - Having given up on unlock codes after the above experiences I decided to rent an unlocking clip from these. For this privilege you pay them £16.99, which includes a £10 deposit you get back when they receive the clip back, or at least, that's what they claim. They took my money through another company called 'green light'. Later the same day they sent me an email saying that they had run out of stock and would give me a refund within 28 days. 28 days later no refund, no unlocking clip and no answers to my emails to mobileunlocked or through green lights 'support centre'.
