Hi folks,
Got my BT broadband line set up yesterday which according to all the tests is within 500m of an exchange and should do 6-8 meg true speed - however Im only getting about 2 . After several calls to BT they said that it takes up to 10 days to increase - I pointed out that I only had 7 days to cancel so if after 7 days its still not ok then what do I do!! Going to contact the ombudsman in Monday about that.....
Link Information

help much appreciated - cheers Richard

Yes with MAXdsl there is learning period.
Try to leave the connection an at all times for a while or you may fool it into a false reading thinking your line will not take a faster speed.0 -
It does indeed take 10 days to find its MSR (Maximum Stable Rate), so you will experience a bit of an up & down in terms of speed.
If its still only 2mb after the 10 days then get a fault reported to BT and they'll run some tests on the line & if need be, send out an engineer (if they diagnose a fault)0 -
Before you go beating a path to the Ombudsman's door be aware that your line is at the mercy of "Adaptive Max Logic" relating to your IP profile which I think you say is 2000 kbps at the moment.
"When your line is first profiled the theory is that the DLM system should set your IP profile in line with your sync speed within the first 75 mins.
If a profile is not correctly set then the default value of 2048/2000 is used. This may clear within 3 days and it may help if you say leave your router switched off overnight... but some lines just seem to get "stuck".
If you suspect a stuck bRAS on your line then you will have to contact your ISP asking them to get BTw to clear a stuck bRAS profile fault"

With your stats you should attain a profile of 7000 kbps, can take up to 5 days for this to be set.
No ISP will even consider investigating "faults" during the first 10 days of activation - the training period - so your conversation with the Ombudsman should be interesting.Keeping the pedants at bay - dot an i or cross a t only if you feel you really can't stop yourself:p0 -
THanks,
I'll leave it for 3 days and see what happens. For the average user this whole thing must be really baffling and should be stated upfront by the companies...
I'll let you know how I get on0 -

Absolutely. Some ISPs do give you chapter and verse about all that stuff - Newnet for one - but others are just content to sign you up and leave you in blissfull ignorance.
Thing is of course if every customer understood how things worked and were able to maximise their connection speed the available bandwidth would drop, congestion would increase at peak times and more people would complain.
Just for your info as normanmark states the training period primarily computes your MSR (set for the lifetime of the connection). It also computes the FTR (Fault Threshold Rate) 20-30 % below the MSR. This is the level below which your ISP can report a fault. In your case 20-30 % of 8096 kbps. If that wasn't enough if your throughput falls in the ranges 400 - 7150kbps (you are getting 2000 kbps at the moment) then BT will not accept any speed related faults.Keeping the pedants at bay - dot an i or cross a t only if you feel you really can't stop yourself:p0 -

Your 7 day right to cancellation is the 7 days from ordering to activation. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 20
