Lack of space on newish laptop

Options
Please be gentle and speak slowly :A

I bought an Acer Aspire laptop last year and put Libra, Skype and one or two little things on it.
When it tried to update Win10 it said there wasn't enough space so i deleted some of the stuff that came with it and tried again, but still there wasn't space.
I did a clean install to see if that helps, but it didn't.

Its showing as having C: Drive 418mb free of 28.5 GB

ESP(f) 47.3 mb of 96.0 mb.

Can anyone help with whats clogging up my LT or where i can find more space please?

It looks as though your laptop came with a Solid-state Drive (SSD) which tend to be smaller but faster than the more traditional magnetic hard drives.

Either that or there has been some kind of error made in the drive configuration that has drastically reduced its size.

Either way, I think you're going to need professional help to reconfigure and (if possible) squeeze W10 on to it.
  • Thank you for your 'plain English' reply.:T

I'll look at taking it in and getting it done properly.

  • You don't need "professional help". Likely you just need to add an SD card to allow you to update.

    What's the full model number?
  • You could tell the folks on which exact model of acer you have, then more helpful replies will be forthcoming

You likely have an acer aspire 1 with 32gb SSD 2GB ram and a celeron N3050 processor :(

This is a very low power machine so dont expect great things from it ..

However it should take a clean install of W10 - you say you have tried this but can you clarify ?
You need to back up any data you want to keep and then boot the machine from a usb stick containing the windows 10 image
The install process will format the drive so there is no reason why this shouldnt work.

You will not be able to go down the "update" route as the machine simply doesnt have enough space.
Windows 7 can consume up to 20GB of drive space when you take into account page files and temp files and although i could probly talk you through slaughtering it enough to allow you to upgrade, it will be a chore.

Your best bet is a fresh install from a usb stick

Just to add, it cannot be upgraded. It uses a soldered in 32Gb eMMC drive
  • I've used this tool for years to find where my space is being used - http://www.extensoft.com/?p=free_disk_analyzer

It sounds like you might be stuck doing windows updates, and they've used a load of space but won't finish until they've all downloaded. But you don't have the space.

Try also running 'disk clean up' using 'clear up system files'
  • Ok I'll try and answer your questions.

It says its an Acer Aspire ES13

    2gb DDRR3L Memory

    Model number ES1-331-P2RV (i think)|

I didn't use a USB to install Win10. How do i get win10 on a USB stick please? what difference does it make coming from a USB?

Will i have space to use this useful tool?

    That sounds exactly whats happening

Try also running 'disk clean up' using 'clear up system
I did this previously, before i did a reinstall, and it didn't do anything.
    Should i try again?

    Thanks for the help

So, part of the problem is that you've got to (or have) downloaded all the Windows 10 stuff to your tiny hard disk.. if it was on a USB stick, then you would have more space on your disk and the upgrade would have a better chance to upgrade.

The tool is 17mb to download - you will have just enough space.

Do the disk clean up first - if you are lucky it will get rid of the partially installed upgrade files. Restart the PC after you've done this

If you have any SD cards hanging around (e.g. in cameras) you might want to expand your storage using it. A 32GB SD card isn't very expensive now (About £14 on Amazon)
