Has Argos Returns Policy Changed?

Over the years, I have often bought items at Argos, safe in the knowledge knowing that if on rare occasions I need to return the item, there won't be a problem.
Not anymore it seems.:mad:
My elderly Mother in her 80s returned a vacuum cleaner a few days after purchasing it as the suction was so strong, she struggled to push or pull it.
Argos refused to take it back as "she had used it". She did use it for a whole 2 minutes. It was the only way of finding out it wasn't suitable for her.
It seems that Argos are a lot stricter now on what they will take back.

And how are you supposed to try out a vacuum cleaner without switching it on? It's not like you get the option to try it out in Argos is it?
Oh well, expensive lesson learnt for an elderly OAP.

You do generally have the right of return using rights granted by the Consumer Contract regulations but when returning goods for a change of mind, the retailer can make a deduction from the refund given (up to the full selling price) if you have excessively handled the goods and this lowers their resale value.
Generally this is taken to mean that you can look at and possibly test the item but only to the same degree as you would be able to in a shop and I don't think too many shops would be happy for you to plug in a vacuum and run around with it for a couple of minutes.0 -

No, all they then have to do is pass back the maliciously damaged goods to you. Result, no refund and no working hoover.

As she is so old im suprised you didnt offer your help her getting it home or back to the shop, you could of advised her what to buy as well.0 -

Argos' returns policy has changed significantly over the years. This is from 1984:
At that time they asked only that returned items were undamaged, with original wrapping and a receipt. And the guarantee applied to "everything" they sold.
