What happens to VED on sale or transfer of vehicle?

Yes, spot on.0

You also have to tax it before you can drive the vehicle on a public road which means, when buying from a dealer for instance, that you have to tax it on line at the dealers premises.0

Technically yes, but if the V5c hasn't been sent off, received and processed by the DVLA (or they haven't been notified online) then no one will be any the wiser.0 -
Ok so if someone gives or sells me a taxed car...
The tax will not come with it, even if both parties want the tax to come with it...?
I can insure it in my name, quick enough, but what about tax?
How can the new keeper declare SORN if they have no V5C?0 -

you should have the new keeper slip0 -

Or alternatively,
Insure it from day 1
But send off the V5C towards the end of the month
And tax it from the 1st of the following month as the new keeper?
The DVLA would refund the old keeper including December (but not November) and the new keeper has taxed it from 1st December....so presumably everyone is happy?
Or if you send off the V5C straight away, the DVLA will still keep the current month November....and will only refund from December.... But do the DVLA record it as untaxed from the date of sale even though they have not refunded the tax for november?
Are the DVLA going to be concerned after you have taxed it from Dec 1st that there was a "gap" of 2 weeks in november tax?0 -

You making a simple process more complex, just tax it online with the new keeper supplement before you drive it.0 -
You don't send the V5 to the DVLA, the seller does or if it's a dealer they may notify the DVLA online when you collect the car, and a dealer may also insist you purchase VED it at the same time either online or at a local Post Office before you drive away, where as a private seller may not.0
