Plug sockets at Grand Bahia Principe Coba - Riviera Maya, Mexico

Hi all,

I hope someone on here can help me with my query. I have not been further than Europe for such a long time and Im not sure what to do.

I am going to the Grand Bahia Principe Coba soon and I need to buy the travel adaptors for items (hairdryer, mobiles, laptop, ipod etc). I was looking at purchasing a travel adaptor extension lead so that I can use a couple of these at the same time.

I have found that there are 2 types of plugs they use: 2 flat pin and a 2 flat pin with 1 round pin.

I am worried that if I purchase the one with the extra round pin, the hotel will only have the 2 flat pin and then I won't be able to charge.

I emailed the hotel and they came back telling me that in Mexico they use either but didn't tell me which ones they use at the actual hotel. I emailed back but they have not replied. They did say I could buy adaptors in their shop but I am guessing that these would be more expensive that buying here so would prefer to buy them here.

Has anyone been to this hotel and can give me a bit of insight as to which ones to buy.

Thanks in advance if anyone has been and can help.
Cheers

I'd ask this question on the appropriate board on the Tripadvisor forum.

It's more likely that there will be someone who has stayed in that particular hotel on there who will be able to answer your question..

The sockets will be three pin, to accommodate the use of either style, as they explained.

    Standard North American sockets methinks

Remember - if your appliances are UK only voltage they won't work there - you need travel devices which can switch to low voltage.

What types of electrical kit are you planning to take to Mexico - that would be useful to know ?

Most phone and tablet/laptop chargers will cope with the lower voltage. Things that heat up, like travel kettles... forget it unless you like waiting an hour for a cup of tea.
  • We took a 2 flat pin/1 round pin to Mexico, if they said you can use either then they will be the 3 pin ones as we also used our 2 pin US one. Your hairdryer likely won't work properly unless it's dual voltage - same with straighteners. The hotel should have a hairdryer in the bathroom (website/tripadvisor reviews should tell you this), all your devices should charge no problems with the lower voltage.

:) Im taking mobile, ipod, hairdryer, Tablet.
  • Thanks. Ive just checked my straighteners and they say "multivoltage for worldwide use". Might just need to buy an up to date travel hairdryer as mine is a few years old now.

    Mobile/Ipod/Tablet will be ok
    Thank you for your reply

I bought last year, from Asda, one of those world wide travel adapters which also had USB ports which were very useful.

Also lent it to a friend this year who was also impressed.
  • You're going where for a holiday, and you're worried about the cost of an extra adaptor . . .?

I'm sure the pound or two adaptors won't be wasted . . .

I'd be strongly tempted to leave the hairdryer - the hotel will almost certainly have them in the rooms.

Send them an email enquiry to verify.

However, if you "must" take the coiffure kit then a basic travel adaptor designed for the country in question is OK, such as this example.

Do you have USB charging cables for the other devices ? If so I'd suggest one of these multi country chargers.

You should find these (or very similar) in stores like B&M etc. - the interchangeable plugs let you use it in many parts of the world, including the UK.
