Gas meter reading going backwards

Update :
I have taken another reading - 24 hours after the last and have discovered that the meter IS moving forwards - We had a gas fire running for 10 hours, yesterday on 1 bar - which I am assuming is approx 1 unit per hour - the whole of that 10 hours only moved the reading on 1 unit - so there IS something amiss with the meter
I have taken photos and have informed Scottish Power (to cover my back !)
Has the meter a digital reading, or pointer and dials?
To read correctly:- Read the dials from left to right
- If the pointer is between two numbers, always take the lower number
- If the pointer falls between 9 and 0, write down 9
- Ignore red dials, ones marked '100 per rev' and the largest dial
Each dial turns in the opposite direction to the one before it. Before you read your dial meter, check the direction of your dials. They may not be exactly as those illustrated above. Every dial on every meter revolves from 0-1 and on through to 9 before continuing to 0 again.0 -
A random sample gas fire heat tech spec heat input range I checked out is 1.5kW to 6.0kW. http://www.robinsonwilley.co.uk/assets/kb/brochure/0/RW_Retail_Brochure.pdf
Assuming you ran @ 1.5 x 10 hr = 15 kWh.
1 unit on a metric gas meter is around 11kWh
1 unit on an imperial is almost 32kWh

So your test probably proves the metric meter is reading correct and your fire on 'one bar' is inputting some 1.1 kW per hour. {Find your manual/brochure for the fire to check?}0 -

Why do you assume a gas fire on a setting of 1 would use 1 unit an hour? Even on a metric meter(cubic metres) 1 gas unit is over 11kWh - a huge amount. On an Imperial meter(cubic ft) a gas unit is 32kWh0 -

If you start generating gas again try changing your diet.0

It turns out that the previous reading had been made by the meter reader who made a widely pessimistic and totally incorrect guesstimate which then affected all.my figure readings !!
Now sorted....0
