swapping front tyres near side to off side

Options
Cheapest place to get my front tyres swapped over, near side to off side and the off side to the near side.
Getting wear on inner corner on the near side tyre, have 6mm all over on both wheels so this would extend the life of the tyre.
I have had Hunter alignment done twice before and why this happens no one seems to know so swapping sides would be worth doing if not too expensive.

You have a jack and a spare, don't you? Do it for free yourself.

NS corner up. Spare on. NS corner down.
OS corner up. NS wheel on. OS corner down.
NS corner up. OS wheel on. NS corner down.

    Job jobbed.

BTW, they're not directional tyres, are they?

  • Compact.. You mean a space-saver?
Why would that prevent you from temporarily using it to switch two regular sized wheels with their tyres on?

If you're looking for the cheapest option, that certainly is the cheapest option as it's free. :j
Unfortunate about the directional bit though.

If not for that snag, it otherwise seems like a really good reply from Adrian to be honest - I mean someone suggesting the cheapest if you're going to a commercial fitter will be so wildly dependant on your local services as to be a useless recommendation, no?

This is a money-saving forum after all ;)

So you want both tyres knocking off the rims, and refitting, with balancing.
Try a backstreet tyre fitter, or one of those "part-worns from £10" places.
I doubt if any of the big places would want the work, and they would likely charge £20 or so.

Probably work out cheaper to just let it wear the edge off, it will still be legal if the central 3/4 has tread on, and then get a new tyre when it goes too far.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Ah - so if they're directionals, then you're going to need to get the tyres themselves demounted from the rims, rather than just swapping the rims side-to-side, then re-balanced.

Ring around the local back-street tyre places. Somebody'll do it for you for a contribution to the tea fund, but without even knowing where in the country you are, any recommendations are inherently useless, aren't they?

Getting wear on inner corner on the near side tyre,
I have never seen a tyre with corners :rotfl:
Swapping front to rear might be more sensible?

The Albanians in the car wash on Harehills Lane will do it. They charge me £30 for swapping my summer to winters (all four) so it’ll be cheaper to just the two you want. They’re quick but don’t expect much conversation. It’s the building opposite Drakes Cycles if you’re not sure where I mean.

Why don't you just swap front to rear yourself?

Space saver wheel will make no difference, although, if it were me, I would just jack up one side of the car, take both wheels off the ground, use axle stands for added stability, drop it down slightly onto the axle stands, then swapsies then down again.

Doing it this way...you can then later swap left to right and gain extra mileage that way.

tykesi, how do you know where OP lives?

Had it done at the same place? Go somewhere else. A steering fault, either a bent rack or suspension arm, for example or worn bushes or a car that has been in an accident and is bent can cause this.

Tyres need removing from the rims, refitting and balancing. Typically around £15-£20 a wheel.

Personally I'd take it elsewhere to get it aligned by someone who actually knows what they're doing and see if there is a fault in the suspension or steering.
