Ok when buying gold/silver how do I verify as a average consumer whether its real not fake?
Do you mean Sovereigns are highly sought after by collectors? Are Sovereigns gold or silver? Whats so special about Sovereigns?
What else will be rare/collectable in the future for gold and silver? Which coins/styles are the most sought after?0 -
bery_451 You appear to know more than you let on. That being said, this is my article of choice when answering such questions.

My dealers of choice for physical are :-

https://atkinsonsbullion.com/
Have not found better prices anywhere else. If you are looking abroad can also recommend you give CID a look. https://www.coininvest.com/en/
As things stand all ‘investment grade gold’ is VAT free in europe, following brexit it will be expected that it remains so. We will have to keep our eyes on how much of european legislation is actually enshrined in UK law..._0 -
I’ve used physicalgold.com a few times and their prices are excellent. They also provide really good advice on which coins to buy. They can also deliver silver VAT free.0

In response to markj113. I am grateful for your expertise and time on this forum.
I would like to add that XRF is a wonderful technology but it only indicates the elements in the layers close to the surface.
If I painted a Gold/ brass or Tungsten ring with a thin layer of paint then I would get the constituents of the paint with an XRF spectrum.
How can you distinguish Gold plated Tungsten from solid gold using XRF ?

You think faking gold is as simple as painting brass or tungsten?
If it was why hasn't the whole bullion + jewellery industry collapsed?
When buying gold you can check physical dimensions, weight, perform a specific gravity test, acid test, xrf test. You can also check the details on the coin design + older coins also have a patina.
Simple solution for people new is to buy from a well known and trusted dealer rather than some dodgy guy on ebay.0 -
Ok any other sites that can deliver silver VAT free? Also is this illegal?

Which coins/styles are the most sought after?
Im looking for gold or silver coins that collectors will want in the future.
Which style or designs from what country and which year of minting gets the most bids from buyers? So many styles and choices don't know which coins to choose.0 -

Silvertogo are cheap and reliable for silver, you cant get silver VAT free in the UK:
https://www.silver-to-go.com/en/
Sovereigns are gold and vary from bullion grade, proof finish to numismatic worth a fortune. Sovereigns are classed as legal tender so there is no VAT on gold + there will be no CGT due on selling.
If you are looking for semi-numismatic coins that are likely to appreciate above and beyond spot gold spot price then chinese gold panda's, Perth mint lunar series are a good bet. Also sovereigns like the recent piedfort and pistrucci versions are likely to appreciate well due to the unique design.0 -

Ok great thats gold sorted, which silvers shall I choose?0 -
Silver takes time to piece out and sell for the best price so if you buy a large quantity this can become a problem. A dealer will only offer a price based on spot value without the added VAT.
A good option for silver is bullionvault, you can buy allocated silver that is regularly audited and you dont need to pay the VAT unless you take physical delivery. Buying and selling is also instant.
If you do want physical silver you can either go for closest to spot and max oz's or go for something that may appreciate faster than spot value only. The 2oz queens best series may be a good bet.
If you are going for the collectable angle don't forget never touch the coins + keep them in the original air tight capsules to prevent tarnish.0 -
Ok looking for gold or silver coins that has a low mint or limited editions, purest gold or silver makeup at 1 troy oz weight and the company delivers physical silver vat free?
Also added to that above list apart from british sovereigns what else collectors want in the future? Anything else from other countries?
What about South African Krugerrands, more value than british sovereigns?
Where can I get at the best cheapest prices safely?0
