20 mph limits

The only 20 mph limits I have seen and driven through in Lincolnshire, are usually in the area of a school. Normally a village Primary school, and due to the nature of many Lincolnshire villages, many schools are situated beside main roads. To drive at above 20 mph through this zone during school hours, would be a criminal offence. The zones are signed with street signs and road markings.
Most of the people ignoring the limits are usually holidaymakers on the way to the coast.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Makes you wonder why for those say 3 hours a day, 180 days a year they don't have a variable limit instead of a permanent 20?0 -

There are quite a lot of well used commuter route A roads that are also residential roads
And with impatient drivers performing dangerous manoeuvres, they are surely more risky with a 20 speed limit than before (?). Btw in my area all roads under local control are 20. A roads under the highways agency are still 30, and round here (London) they are almost all residential too.0 -

If only that was true. I regularly drive through built-up areas that look like they should be 30s but are in fact 40s - so being a built up area with lampposts isn't the defining factor for a 30 limit. Also there are non-built-up areas that are 30 limits but look similar to other roads that are 40 or even 50 limits. Without repeaters, it's easy to get it wrong. And yes, I've got it wrong in the past. Please don't do the 'holier than thou' thing and say that I should have known. Of course I should have known - but I didn't know, I genuinely thought it was a 40 limit. Country road, woods on both sides, no buildings of any sort. Repeaters would have helped. That's why they're used for all other speed limits, so why not for 30 limits?
Why make it difficult? If it's important that people drive at 30 or below, then why not make it easier for us to get it right?No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

It certainly is, and has been for over 80 years.
If the limit is anything other than 30, then there must be either repeaters (as in your 40 example) or traffic-calming (in 20 zones).
The real problem is that repeaters are often not frequent enough, either by design, or because they go AWOL. But this is effectively a fail-safe system since, a missing repeater will suggest a 30 limit. If a 30 limit required repeaters, what would a missing one indicate?0
