20 mph limits

I've noticed that in some areas these are very well signed with repeater signs all along the road. In these areas my TomTom also shows the limit as 20. In other areas, mainly south London, they just seem to paint 20 on the road and that is it. Is this deliberate entrapment or are the councils just trying it on?

There are two distinct systems. One is the traditional limit, with repeater signs.
The other is the 20 zone, which is signed at the entry points but has no repeaters. Instead, it must have traffic calming measures (humps etc.) at regular specified intervals.0 -
AFAIK, There should be a pair of signs when you transition to the 20 from another (usually a 30). I would guess the painted on the roadway version is the repeater. Though I'm sure someone will be along soon to link to the proper regulations...I need to think of something new here...0

I believe it's cheaper to paint on the roads than it is to provide repeaters. As a tax payer, council tax payer, and road fund licence payer, this pleases me.
What's entrapment got to do with it? You know it's a 20 limit - so you know what to do.
I have more of an issue with 30 limits - you can tell it's a 30 limit because there aren't any signs (apart from the initial ones). What sort of !!!!-eyed logic is that?No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Does anyone obey the 20mph? Don't seem to round here.0

20 mph roads are my pet hate. No problem on residential roads but round my way several well used commuter route A roads have new 20 speed limits. Try and stick to it and you get tailgated, and impatient motorists will try dangerous under- or overtaking manoeuvres.
Btw the rules on repeater signs have changed, and personally I prefer the unmissable 20 signs painted on the road.0 -

This pleases you? Why? Do taxpayers receive a rebate on their tax bill if their local council paints on the road instead of putting up a sign?
Well some people who don't only care about things they financially benefit from like to see the council and governments spending their money efficiently so it can have the biggest benefits to everyone.0
