and sent me off with a ton of cooked veg too, which was gonna go to waste. I'm gonna cook up in2 a bubble n squeak concoction 2moz, maybe burgers??? EDIT: Mashed all the veg, which included stuffing, seasoned with salt & lots of pepper and added a couple of tablespoons of Nutritional Yeast, to give a cheesy flavour, plus some brown lentils, which were in the fridge. Made 7 large burgers, which are now freezing.
Really wanted to say, the burgers tasted beautiful, I wasn't overly sure how the grilled product would taste. I would highly recommend if you have any leftover veg, honestly one of the nicest burgers I have made, n I have made loads. Replace the nutritional yeast for 'maybe' some cheese, if you don't have any or flour, n flavour/spice accordingly. My friend's coming 'round to do some work for me 2moz, n he will be getting these for lunch.
  • Holding to my (slightly-overspent) total here; not one penny more spent, no shops visited whatsoever for any reason, and plenty to eat tomorrow before payday on Friday, which is also market day. We're out of bread, so I'll have to pop a loaf into the breadmaker tonight, but all other supplies are still looking healthy, even the butter, which I had worried wasn't going to see us through. One of The Offspring has meandered off back up to Town, and one will be returning to Uni early next week, but I will need to set a lower limit for January, even though as far as I know we'll still have one extra mouth to feed.

There's a degree of uncertainty because DS2 could return to the house he and his ex were renting; they have to pay the rent etc. until the end of February regardless, but she's moving out next week. It remains to be seen whether he'll move back in, but I think he's actually enjoying being part of the family again, even if there's no room on the driveway for his car most nights. But I'm not asking him for any rent, especially not whilst he's paying rent/council tax/bills on that house, so won't make any concessions for him on the food front; if he wants anything more than I'm offering, he'll have to buy it himself. Afterwards, I'd rather he saved towards some sensible training for a career; the ex kyboshed his previous plans in her rush to get them saddled with a home/"decent" cars/expensive wedding.

I've done it before, I can make the general household budget stretch... probably!

December budget was blown but have used up leftovers, have 2 rammed freezers, lots of booze, cheese and crackers and cakes/chocs left which have a longer shelf life.

For once I cooked the right amount and had enough leftovers to keep us going until this evening but nothing has had to be thrown out :)

My January budget starts tomorrow and I am looking to reduce what I spend on groceries to a challenging but reasonable budget. I wont be renewing my Mr T delivery saver and will be going back to Aldee.
    Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%
    Pay off £7000 - £1743 - 19.4%

  • Merry Christmas everyone and I hope all your days were lovely and delicious. Just a quick check in before I head to bed. I haven't spent anything for the past 3 days. That brings me up to:

    10 NSD
    €375.19 / €350.00 for groceries
    £198.57 / £200 London stocking up fund

Hopefully we'll be able to get through to next Monday without spending anything but who knows. I'm taking it all in stride right now. :) We're off on a day trip in the morning and i'm packing my breakfast along with some snacks. We'll get lunch and dinner in the other town then head home. I'll catch up on your posts on the train. Have a good night all.
  • Hi all! I didn't join in this month, and what do you know, it's the first month that I've come in under budget! That's because my budget was huge ($1400) to accommodate guests and entertaining, admittedly. We came in at $1220 which looks enormous, but honestly we were spending that on a normal month before the Grocery Challenge.

Anyway I just wanted to say Merry Christmas, and also pop into this thread so I can spot when the January one is created since it's not there yet. Well done one and all!

Small shop at Mr T yesterday spent £34.01 although that did include 2 therm*s food flasks, as we quite often have picnic's as a family and I'd prefer to take warm food in the winter. Thinking Soups and leftover stews etc. They were £5.50 instead of £11.
Will probably need to buy bread and milk before the budget starts again, and we're low of breakfast cereals although have loads of porridge so will try and make it last!
    Spends currently stand at £488.35/£650

I am NOT reporting for the month but intend to redeem myself in January!
Officially in a clique of idiots
  • Morning all. Yesterday was a NSD in terms of groceries. Today will be as well, most likely but I'll hold off on that declaration just yet. :)

I'm thinking of making a shepherd's pie with some of my remaining lamb leg. I may add mushrooms to the filling to bulk it out. Does anyone have a good recipe they can share, please? I can't remember if I've ever made one TBH. But, if I did, it was yeeeeeaaars ago. Please and thank you.

  • Oh! And I'm looking for the new January 2018 thread and it doesn't seem to be started yet. Is everything alright with zippychick and the other mods? I hope they're okay.
